EGG-BEATER.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912 Application filed January 2,-1912. Serial No. 8%,924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY A. GRANT, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Thonipsonvil'le, in the county of lartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Egg-Beaters, ofwhich the ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in egg beaters of a kind comprising frames or blades which are revoluble about a centralized vertical part and which comprise means for causing the rapid rotative movements of such frames.
An object of the invention is to provide an egg beater of the general class to which this invention relates, with a foot-piece of such shape and character that it forms a reliable base support for the beater irrespective of the form or nature of the utensil in connection with which it is used, and which foot piece is also cooperative with the revolubly bladed machine to secure a quicker and more thorough egg beating action.
Another object is to construct the centrally rotative spirally ribbed shaft of the egg heater and skeleton frames carried thereby from wire in a most simple manner whereby the manufacturing cost of the device is greatly reduced.
Other objects are for minor improvements of the device as will be hereinafter rendered apparent.
The invention is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and is set forth in the claims.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is an elevationof the improved egg beater shown as in use in a bowl having the handle thereof in central vertical section. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view enlarged as seen in an upward direction beyond the section line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side view of the foot portion of the heater in a compressed condition.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
In this egg beater, paired wire members a a are twisted about each other for a portion of the lengths thereof to form a spirally ribbed shaft A, the cross section of which is comprised in two adjoined circles as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The end portions of one of the wire members a are extended transversely relatively to the lower portion of the shaft A and bent to form a skeleton frame B at one side of the shaft, the wire being transversely continued in the portion b to the other side of the shaft and bent to form the skeleton frame B opposite the one B, the extremity of such wire being formed as eye 0. The other one of the two wire members has the downward extension d between and terminating near or below the bottom of the opposed frames B, B and around which, a short distance above its free end the eye formed extremity c of the other wire has an encircling relation to form a shoulder or stop.
The extremity of the central and clownward extension of the wire below the aforementioned shoulder for the coil or eye receives connection therewith of a foot piece D wh ch is made as a spring having the form of that sometimes termed a valve spring, that is, it is a spring comprising coils having a rising relation one to the next and each successively decreasing in diameter so that the spring foot piece is of an approximately conical or inverted cupshape; and its uppermost coil terminates in a small eye 7 which encircles the downwardly extending portion of the wire comprised in the spiral shaft and is retained in place thereon by a washer 9 held in place by the opposite or headed end 72. of the wire.
The foot piece, as manifest, is susceptible of compression from its expanded condition shown in Fig. 1 toits compressed condition shown in Fig. 4. i
The handle F of the egg beater is made with the bore or chamber m therein which opens to the lower end of the handle proper and it has a closing cap n at its lower end provided with an elongated opening 0 through which the wire formed spirally ribbed shaft has a rotation impelling engagement, when the handle is vertically moved relatively to the shaft as common in spiral tool drivers, the handle being firmly held against rotation, the shaft necessarily rotating under the reciprocation of the handle relatively to the shaft.
W'ith the foot-piece resting on the bottom of a bowl or dish the forcing of the handle downwardly causes the rotary motion of the spirally ribbed shaft and the frames therewith in one direction, and insures a maximum compression of the spring, t, which is in' closed in the hollow handle and is in reaction in a downward direction against the shaft; then when the hand pressure is relieved the reaction of the spring causes relatively an upward movement of the handle for the reversed rotation of the egg beater,-this mechanical action being a familiar one as ex emplified in spiral tool drivers.
Provision of the foot-piece ofthe inverted cup-shape insures a satisfactory bottom support for the eg beater even wherethe lower end thereof is held against the bottom of a bowl of convex form as represented in Fig. 1; and by the manner of engagement, as stated between the. lower extended part of the shaft and the foot piece whereby the one may rock relatively to the other, the user of the device is relieved of the necessity for care that the same be held in a perfectly upright position.
As represented in Fig. 1, the spirally .ribbed shaft, the opposed revoluble frame and the bottom extension d are all constituted by a single length of wire, the manner of bending which is apparent.
It will be manifest that when the egg beater is operated, for instance, in a bowl in which the material to be beaten stands only up to a comparatively low level, the downward pressure exerted in the driving action will serve to compress the spring foot piece D so that the blades are low down in the receptacle for the assured beating up of the eggs, the white or yolk only of an egg or the other matter to be subjected to the beating action; and, furthermore, the action of the spring foot piece of compression and expansion is an auxiliary, for the beating action, to the revoluble blades.
For-a suitably broad rest for the lower end of the spring t, the upper extremity of the spirally ribbed shaft has a cylindrical head u of lead or other metal cast thereon; and in the comparatively short space between the head and the cap at is a cushioning spring 41 which on the upstroke of the handle prevents the cap from being brought to contact against the head.
I claim 1. In an egg beater, in combination, paired wire members, which for portions of the lengths thereof are twisted about each other to form a spiral shaft, the end portion of one of the members being extended and bent to form a skeleton frame at one side of the spiral shaft, and transversely continued and bent to form a skeleton frame at the other side of such shaft, while the other wire memher is downwardly extended between, and below the bottom of, such opposed frames, and provided with a foot-piece with which it has a rotative, and also a rocking engagement, a hollow handle having a closing cap at its lower end provided with an elongated opening through which the wire-formed spiral shaft has arotation impelling engagement, and a spring in said hollow handle reacting downwardly against the spiral shaft.
2. In an egg beater, in combination, a single length of wire, intermediately doubled on itself and the adjacent paired wire members being for portions of their lengths twisted the one about the other to form a spirally ribbed shaft, the end portion of one of the members being extended and bent in the form of an elongated coil to form a skeleton frame at one side of the shaft, such end portion, furthermore, being transversely continued and bent to form' an elongated coil at the other side of the shaft, while the other wire member is downwardly extended between, and below the bottom of, such opposed coils, and provided with a foot-piece with which it has a rotative, and also a rocking engagement, a hollow handle having a closing cap at its lower end provided with an elongated opening through which the wire-formed spiral shaft has engagement for a rotation impelling effect, and a spring in said hollow handle reacting downwardly against the spiral shaft.
3. In an egg beater, in combination, wire members twisted about each other to form a straight spirally ribbed shaft having skele ton like frames, supported by and extended from different sides of said shaft, and one of said wire members being downwardly extendedbelow the bottoms of said frames, a foot-piece consisting of a wire bent to form a spring having rising coils of successively diminishing diameter and secured at its top to said wire extension. of the spirally ribbed shaft, a hollow handle having a cap closing its lower end, which is provided with an aperture of shape conforming to the cross sectional shape of said shaft, and through which the shaft is engaged, and a spring in the hollow handle reacting downwardly against the shaft.
4:. An egg-beater, comprising a plurality of frames and a centralized part about which, as their axis, said frames rotate, such central part extending below the frames, and provided with a wire formed foot-piece comprising rising coils of successively decreased diameter and secured to the central downward extension ofsaid centralized part.
5. In an egg beater, a single length of wire intermediately doubled on itself and the adjacent paired wire members being, for portions of their lengths, twisted the one about the other, the end portion of one of the members being outwardly extended and bent to form a skeleton frame, such end portion being transversely continued and bent to form a skeleton frame at the other side of the shaft and having its extremity bent to form an eye which is centrally located, while the and means for the retention of said coil other wire member is downwardly extended spring eye in such engagement. through said eye, and a foot piece consisting Signed by me at Springfield, Mass, in
