This invention relate-.5` to apparatuses for burning oil.
The main obj-ect ot thc invention is to provide an eiicient. oihiiurninf; apparatuS which is so designed that thc oil will dow freely to a Steam nozzle from which a jet of perfectly dry Steam escaping. which jet ot steam atolnizes the eil and converts it Vinto a las that is suppiied to the coinhution chamber.

To insure a steady and free flow of oil from the oil-supply tank 14 I have provided the apparatus with means for heating the oil in the tank 14, the means herein shown consisting of an extension 8 from the riser 8, through which steam passes upwardly through the tank 14 and fiows back through a return pipe 22 to the water tank A, said return pipe being preferably provided with a gage 23, and the riser 8 with a safety valve 24.'
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: A small quantity of oil is poured into the pan 25 that is arranged in the combustion chamber under the boiler and Within a few minutes steam is generated and flows into the member 9, where it is raised to a very high degree of temperature so that a jet of dry steam will emerge from the nozzle. The valve 19a is regulated so as to cause the oil to drop from the lower end of the'pipe 20, and, when said drops of oil come in Contact, with the jetof highly heated dry steam that emerges from the nozzle 11, the oil will be atomized and converted into a highly combustible gas which produces a very hot flame in the combustion chamber, the-Steam which circulates up through the riser 8a causing the oil in the tank 14 to become heated, and the filtering device that is arranged between said oil-supply tank and the oil'discharge pipe 20 causing ali of the dirt and foreign matter to be separated from the oil before it is mixed with the steam. In view of the fact that both the boiler 4 and the steam-superheating member 9 are exposed directly to the ame n the combustion chamber, the apparatus can be started quickly and the steam which is supplied to the steam nozzlell will be perfectly dry.
I do not wish it to be understood that my invention is limited to an apparatusof the exact construction herein shown, nor to an apparatus that comprises means for tilten ing and heating the oil before it is mixed with the jet of steam. It is desirable, however, to first heat the oil and filter it in the manner herein shown as this insures a oonstant and steady supply of fuel to the steam nozzle.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an oil-burning furnace, the combination with the combustion chamber and a burner therein comprising' steam and oil nozzles, of a drum connected to a sourcey of water supply and arranged in said chamber directly opposite to said burner, a boiler consistingr of a tubular menioer located above and connected to said drum, a pipe running longitudinally through said member and opening into the latter at one end. a valve to control the opening at the end of said pipe, and' a superheater connected to the other end of said pipe and to Said steam nozzle. l
