When one or more of the yarn guides are raised to Withdraw the corresponding yarn or yarns from the needles, the yarn or yarns not being fed to the needles'is held inside the needles by a retainer 65, so that the yarn is properly presented to the needles when the guide is again moved down into active position, The retainer is lifted to allow the yarn to'pass under it by a lever 66 which is operated by an upward movem'ent of one of'the yarn guides, and is immediately released by a short downward movement of the guide so that the retainer immediately engages and holds the yarn.
