Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. VA'ooLAiN, a citizenof the United States. residing in i Philadelphia, Philadelphia county, State of reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.
This invention relates generally to super- "Hiaaters for locomotive and like boilers in which the superheater pipes are located in the fire-tubes of the boiler.
The object of the invention is to facilitate the withdrawal and replacement of any unit or single group of superheater pipes without disturbing the others. y

Preferably the opening through, the walls of the header is formed on a taper and the chambered plug g which is inserted therein is correspondingly tapered to facilitate the formation of a steam tight joint. Each plug g, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, has a removable cap orfront end 9', a rear. end or wall 9 and an intermediate wall g these walls forming a chamber 9*, corresponding to the chamber f of the header, and a chamber 9* corresponding to the chamber f of the header. The chamber is provided with a port g to afford communication with the chamber f and the chamber 57 is likewise provided with a port ff to aiford communication with the chamber f. The cap 9 is preferably flanged as shown so that it may besecured to the header by bolts h h, which may extend through all of the walls of the header or into the front wall duly. One end of the corre sponding super-heater unit is secured to the plug 9 so as to communicate with the chamher 9 and receive therefrom the saturated while the other end of the unit is carried through achamber g and is connected to the plug in communication with the chamber 9, so as to deliver the superheated steam thereto, as indicated at it in Figs. 1 and 3. Tight joints, between the ends of the superheater unitand the walls of the plug are made in the usual manner. The superheater pipes of each'unit may be arranged in any suitable manner. Preferably, however, they are-arranged as shown in the drawings, two pipes i being in communication. with the saturatedsteam chamber 9' at their forward ends and being connected at their rear ends,
