PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 4, 1911.
Patented uly 30, 1912. Serial No. 652,721.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES T. GANTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to plows and has for an object to provide a plow of the type known as middle-burster plows, embodying a point and an integral crest, with improved means for maintaining wings or moldboards in conjunction with such point and crest.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a double mold-board or middleburster plow a continuous upwardly curved crest terminating at one end at the point and at its opposite end at the upper edge of the mold-boards. 7
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :F igure 1 is a view of the improved plow in front elevation. Fig. 2 is a view of the improved plow with one of the mold-boards removed and the wing of the point broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of one of the mold-boards showing the beveled end for engagement with the point. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4:.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. 1
As shown in the drawings, the point 10 is substantially the usual and ordinary point employed in double mold-board or middleburster plows with the usual and ordinary crest 11 extending upwardly from the center line of such point but in the present construction the shin is extended upwardly to the top of the mold- boards 12 and 13 by formingan angular strip or shin 14: integral with such point. The point is also provided with wings 15 and 16 which have lugs 17 and 18 formed adjacent the outer ends of such wings and the mold- boards 12 and 13 are provided with notches 19 which engage such lugs 17 and 18 and the ends'are beveled as at 20 to engage under the beveled portion 21 of the wings of the point. By this construction a single bolt 22 through the openings 52-3 of each of the mold-boards and through the opening 24 of the frog will hold such mold-board in engagement with the frog and the point, the point being held in position upon the frog by the bolts 25.
It is well known that the points of plows, especially in the double mold-board or middle-burster plows, wear out much sooner than the mold-boards, in fact many points are worn out before the mold-boards are worn to such a condition as to be discarded. Ordinarily mold-boards are so proportioned that the front edges of the mold-board meet to form the shin above the shin of the point which extends no farther up than the limits of the point itself. The result is that the edges of the mold-boards which form such shin becomeworn and rounded and fail to perform to the best advantage their function. In the present invention the shin is provided integral with the point so that when a new point is supplied a new and sharp shin is also provided to best perform its function of separating the furrows which are to be turned in opposite directions. Also the formation of the point and shin, as shown, provides means for locking and positioning the mold-board so that a single bolt will hold each of said moldboards in position relative to the point, the shin andthe frog.
I claim 1. In a double mold-board plow, a point provided with wings upon opposite sides and a shin extending above the wings, said wings being provided with beveled edges and a lug at each of their outer ends and the said mold-boards being provided with beveled extremities to engage under the beveled portions ofthe point and with notches to engage the lugs.
-2. In a doublemold-board plow, a point provided with Wings upon opposite sides, a shin integral with the point and extending above the wings, said Wings being provided With lugs adjacent their outer edges, and mold-boards provided With notches in their lower outer corners proportioned to engage the lugs of the wings.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES T. GANTT.
