RAILROAD-TIE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDMUND C. SCHMA- DEKA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grangeville, in the county of Idaho and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad- Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to railroad ties and the principal object of the same is to provide a tie with an improved type of securing means so that a rail may be connected with the tie.
This tie is provided with sets of pivotally mounted clamps which extend transversely of the tie and are held by means of bolts passing through the tie.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings it will be seen that this invention comprises a tie having a base plate 10 from which there extends the longitudinally extending rib 11, and the transversely extending ribs 12, the ribs 12 being provided with enlarged feet forming pivot ears 13. The rails 14 rest upon the ribs 11 and 12 in the seats 12' and are held in place by means of clamps which are pivotally mounted upon the tie. The clamp may be formed either as shown in the principal figures or may be formed as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, but it is preferred to use the form shown in the principal figures. This clamp comprises a plate of metal which is crimped intermediate its length to form the pocket 15, and the upper and lower portions 16 and 17. The lower portion 17 is provided with a slot 18 which starts in the pocket 15 and. extends to the lower end of the plate so that the lower portion is divided into two sections, the end of each section being rolled as shown at 19. ing through the slot 18 and is held in place by means of a pivot pin 20 which passes through the pivot cars 13 and through the rolledlower end portions 19 of the plate. The plate is thus pivotally connected with the tie so that it may be swung out of and into engagement with the rail and the plates are held in a clamped position by means of the bolts 21 which pass through the ribs 12. When in a clamped position, the base of the rail fits in the pockets l5 and the upper portions 16 of the plates engage the web of the rail so that the rail will be very tightly clamped, and will also be braced. When the clamping plates are released they may be swung away from the rail so that the rail may be easily removed but are limited in their outward movement by the rib 11 which passes through the slots 18.
In Figs. 7 and 8, I have shown a modified form 0r clamp in which there are provided the two clamps 22 which are mounted upon opposite sides otthe rib 11, and which are pivotally mounted between the rib 11 and the pivot ear 13 by means of the pivot pin 23. These clamps are each provided with a shank 24 carrying an enlarged head 25 which engages the rail and fits closely against the base, web and tread of the rail so that the rail may be braced and greatly strengthened. It should be noted that in this type of securing clamp the same principle is used but that the clamps are constructed upon slightly different designs.
What is claimed is 1- 1. A tie comprising a base plate, a longitudinally extending rib carried by said base plate, a transversely extending rib at each end of said base plate, pivot ears at the base of each of said transversely extending ribs, and clamping plates pivotally mounted between said pivot ears and said longitudinally extending rib and adapted to clamp said rails mounted upon said tie.
2. A tie comprising a base plate, a longitudinally-extending rib carried by said base plate. transversely extending ribs carried by said base plate, pivot ears carried by said base plate at each side of said transversely extending ribs, clamping plates pivotally mounted between said pivot ears and having their lower portion provided with slots through which said longitudinally extending rib passes.
3. A tie comprising a base plate, a longitudinally extending rib mounted thereon,
transversely extending ribs carried by said base plate, pivot ears at the base of said transversely extending ribs, clamping plates pivotally mounted between said pivot ears and having their lower portions provided With slots through which said longitudinally extending rib passes, and their central portions criinped to form pockets to receive the base of a rail, and securing bolts passing through said clamping plates and through said transversely extending ribs to secure said clamping plates in a clamped position.
4. A tie comprising a base plate, a longitudinally extending rib carried by said base plate, transversely extending ribs carried by said base plate, pivot ears at the bases of said transversely extending ribs, clamping plates pivotally mounted between said pivot ears, and said longitudinally extending rib, and enlarged heads carried by said clamping plates and adapted to engage the side portions of a rail to secure said rail upon said tie.
