COMBINATION-PDLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
'Patented lily 3), 1912.
Application tiled .Tune 7, 1910.` Serial No. 565,482. Renewed .Tune 4, 1912. Serial No. 701,657.
To all Lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Lenin. a citizen oii the United States of America, residing at San Quentin, in the county of Marin .and lStatie of California., have invented cerltain nent/'a d useful improvements in Conibination-P dlocks, of which the following is a specificationilreference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
rl`his inventionv relates to combination padlocks, and the principal object of the same is to provide means which will facilitate the operation of the lock'and reduce the wear upon the working parts.
In carrying out, the objects of the .invention generally stated above it will be Winderstood. of course, that the essentiahjtfeatures thereof are necessarily suscept1 ble of changes in detai'ls and structural 'arrangements. certaiil preferred and practical embodiments of which are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure lv is a view in vertical section of a padlock constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2'is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of the operating pin and antifriction rollers. Fig. el is an end view of the. devices shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the tumblers of the padlock. detail sectional view thereof.
Referring to said drawings, it will be seen that the improved padlock comprises a frame the base l of which carries theangular end bars 2 3. Said bar 2 has its free end portionprovided with' a longitudinal recess el which is intersected by a transverse opening 5. T he other end bar is providfd with a pivot ear G at its free end to which one end of a shackle 7 is pivotally connected. The other end of said shackle is adapted to be fitted within recess 4 of bar Q and is provided with a transverse opening H that alines with opening 5 of said recess l. -llnd bar Il is provided with an intermediate transverse opening 9 that is in alinement with the opening 5 of bar 2 and through which a pin l0 extends that is adapted to pass through opening 5 and enter opening t5 of shackle 7 to lock said shackle to bar 9.. lin l() is provided with a suitable finger grip l1 and an abutment flange l2 which Lto release pix` F ig. 6 is an enlarged` limits the movement of said pin in one direction. Said pin is also provided with a longitudinal row of seats 13 for the antifriction rollers '14.
The pin l() is retained in a shackle locking or unlocking position b'v the tumblers l5 which are arranged to form combinations which are necessary to complete before the pin can be moved to engagement 'with or be disengaged from the shackle 7.
Said tumblers are lof the saine construction and are mounted on pm l0 between the end bars 2 and 3. The .tumblers are preferably in the form of disks provided with a cen-A tral transverse counterbored opening 16 with which a lateral opening 17 communicates. v
An abutment stop 'l5 extendsthrough bar 3 and is in the path of movement of the rolle-rs lai of pin l() and thereby limits the outward movement of said pin. Said stop is preferably in the form of a removable screw,.\vhich Inav be removed when it desired to remove the pin l07 such for eX- ample to permit .the tumbler-s to be interchanged to permit le tifonabination to be changed.
it will be sec Ltroni the foregoing that in shackles T, the openings 17 of the tumbler-s must be in alinement to permit the rollers i-l of .said pin to be moved therethrough. it will also be clear that the use of rollers facilitatesthe operation of the lori; and prevents wear on the parts thereof.
lVhat I rlain: as in v invention iszl. i combination padlock comprising a frame, a .shackle thereforf pin movable in said .frame and controlling the locking of said shackle to said frame, rollers carried by said pin, and ine-ans supported b v said pin adapted to engage said rollers to normally prevent said pin being moved to a shackle-releasing position.
2. 1i combination padlock comprising a base. a shackle therefor. a pin slidabie in said base and controlling said shackle7 antifriction rollers carried by said pin. and combination tumble s carried by said pin and adapted to engage said rollers to prevent the said pin being operated.
3. A combination padlock comprising a frame, a shackletheret'oi .provided with il v 5 combination tumblers carried by lsaid pin recess in its free end, a pin 'slidable in said base and adapted' to engagedthe said recess signature in presence of two Witnesses.
to lock the shackle to sai frame, anti- 1 y friction rollers carried by said pin, andi JOSEPH LORLX' In {estimoy Whereof I hereunto aix my W itnesses:v and adapted 'to en age said rollers to pre- DANIEL SULLIVAN, vent the said pin elng operated. J. H. MURRAY.
