Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30', 1912.
Application filed March 27, 1911. Serial No. 617,137.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE LANDRO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thief River Falls, in the county of Pennington, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to axes, and has particular reference to one used for cutting brush and the like.
The object of the invention is to produce an article of this character so formed, that the operator may assume an upright position when using.
A further object of the invention is to provide simple means by which the socket for the handle is connected to the blade, and in a position substantially oblique to the plane of the blade, whereby the operator may assume a comfortable position when using.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the blank forming the cutting blade. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the blank from which the socket and shank are formed. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the socket and shank blank. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the blade and shank and socket member in their assembled position.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the blank forming the blade, and is provided along its front with a cutting edge 2. The blade 1 is formed so as to provide an integral extension 8, and to which the ends of the blank forming the shank and socket are to be welded. The shank and socket blank is preferably formed from steel of heavier quality than that from which the blade is formed and has its opposite edges slightly curved as shown at 4 of the drawing.
In practice the shank and socket blank is bent upon itself, so that one of its ends extends beyond the other, the extended end being adapted, when the extension 3 of the blade is passed between the ends, to assume a position upon the under side of the blade 1 at a point slightly in advance of its rear edge. It will be of course understood before the shank is welded to the blade, the same has been bent upon a suitable form so as to produce a socket 5. When the blanks are thus assembled the same are then welded, in a suitable manner, and that part of the shank between the rear edge of the extension 3 and socket 5 is subjected to a swaging' action which will flatten the device at this point so as to provide a greatly, thickened shank which will add to the strength, and will prolong the life of a device of this character indefinitely, as it is at this point that devices of this kind usually weaken and break. After this operation the shank is given a partial twist so as to arrange the socket 5 obliquely to the plane of the blade 1, which will then permit the usual wooden handle to be secured within the socket in the usual manner.
What is claimed, is
As a new article of manufacture, an ax head comprising a strip of material, a shank formed upon one of the longitudinal edges of the said strip and extending laterally therefrom, the opposite edge of the said strip being beveled producing a resultant cutting edge, a second strip, shanks formed upon the said second strip, one of the shanks being greater in length than the other, the shorter of the last mentioned shanks engagmg one side of the first mentioned shank,
and the longer of the last mentioned shanks engaging the opposite side of the first mentioned shank and a portion of the first mentioned strip, the second mentioned strip being bent to produce a handle receiving socket and the shanks between the first mentioned strip and socket being twisted whereby the socket will extend at an oblique angle with respect to the said first mentioned strip.
