Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER E. Book, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hotchkiss, in the county of Delta and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to motors and to one designed particularly for use in connection with the sign as disclosed in my copending application, filed December 31, 1910, Serial Number 600,306, the object of the invention being to provide a motor embodying a discharge tube, an absorbent collecting element, and a movable member disposed between the discharge tube. and the collecting element and designed to receive its power through adhesion from the discharge tube.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a front view of the motor showing the same in use in connection with a sign. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. .3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. A is a section through a portion of the tank and through one of the valves. Fig. 5 is a section through the supporting standard showing the manner of connecting the attracting element therefor. Fig. 6 is a section through the filling opening of the tank and strainer. Fig. 7 is a section through the balance rod and bearing showing the manner of connecting the former thereto.
The motor comprises a suitable frame, preferably the one shown at 1 in the drawings. The frame comprises a base 2 having a vertically extending front 3 in which is formed a view opening l. At the top, the
frame is provided with a horizontally disposed tank 5 in the top of which is a filling opening 6. A removable cap 7 closes the opening so as to prevent the entrance thereinto of foreign matter. A strainer 8 extends downwardly into the receptacle from the opening, and as shown, the strainer comprises a suitable fabric receptacle 9 whose upper edge is secured between the clamping rings 10 and 11. The ring 10 is formed of a series of tongues 12 which are bent into overlapping engagement with the ring 11 so as to hold both rings operatively applied to the upper open end of the receptacle. When the receptacle is operatively associated with the tank 5 the ring 10 is seated against the shoulder 13 in the tank so as to prevent the strainer from being accidentally dropped int-o the tank as will be understood.
At each side of the opening 4 in the front 3 of the frame is a removable receptacle 14 and extending partly over the receptacle is a piece of cheese-cloth 15 or other suitable absorbent material to forma collector for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The absorbent material is secured to the receptacle by means of a suitable clamping band 16. At the top, and near one of the longitudinal edges the receptacle 1A is formed with a longitudinally extending leaf spring 17.
A depending hook 18 is secured to the bottom of the tank 5 immediately in line with the central portion of the opening 1 in the front 3, and as shown, this hook removably supports the sign 19 which consists preferably of a ring stamped from flat sheet material and having the desired descriptive matter on its front side. At the rear side, the ring is formed to provide an annular bead 20 which is engaged with the supporting hook 18 so as to hold the sign centrally with respect to the view opening in the front 3 of the frame. A supporting standard 21 extends upwardly from the base 2 of the frame and at the upper end, the standard is provided with a bearing 22. This bearing is preferably mounted on a forwardly extending portion 23 of the standard, and as illustrated, the bearing is disposed immediately at the center of the sign when the sign is operatively supported on the hook 18. A movable attracting element is supported by the standard, and as illustrated, it comprises a ring 25 formed of flat material and providing a circular con tinuous portion 26 which is formed with an annular series of openings 27 to register with the characters of the sign on movement of the attracting element. A balance rod 28 is secured to the attracting element on the rear side thereof, and as shown, such balance rod is formed at its center with a balance pin 29 which is of substantially V- form in vertical section so as to present a knife edge. The balance pin 29 is mounted in the bearing 22 on the forwardly extending portion 23 of the standard which rises from the'base 2 so as to provide most perfeet means whereby the rod can be rocked brought into the desired but normally balanced so as to assume 'ahorizontal position. The rod is extended at: each end outwardly beyond the attracting element and at each extremity is formed a' horizontal eye 30 or weight-carrying element. Immediately adjacent the eye the rod is formed with an obstruction 31 which is substantially of V-form, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
Near each end, the tank 5 is provided at its bottom with a valve 32 having a depending nipple 33 to which is secured a tube 34 constituting a substantially capillary discharge tube. The discharge tube preferably comprises a short rubber tube which is formed on its lower surface to provide a relatively flat face 35. The valve may be of any well known construction which may be found most desirable for the purpose intended, but as illustrated, it is provided with a turning plug 36 whose port-way may be registration with the tube. The tank 5 is designed for the reception of water or any other liquid and the 'valves'at the opposite ends of the tank are located immediately above the receptacles l4.
g In operation of the motorherein described and shown, the sign is operatively supported by the hook 18, after which the attracting element is mounted in its bearing on the supporting standard 21 so as to be disposed immediately in front of the sign. -When the attracting element is operatively supported on the standard the eye portions or weight-carrying elements at the ends of the balance rod are disposed immediately beneath the discharge tubes on the valves. The discharge tubes as herein previously termed on the discharge ends of the valves are of a construction which will permit the water discharged from the valves to collect or accumulate in the lower ends of the tubes and on the flat lower surfaces thereof through capillary attraction and adhesion so'that when the eye portions of the attracting element come in contact with the discharge ends of the tubesthe water accu1nulated'by the tubes will be taken up bythe eye portions of the attracting element and through the weight of the water the element will-be rocked. The rocking movement of the attraetingelement causes an alternating contactof the eye portions with therespective discharge tubes as will be understood. The absorbent material coverings for the receptacles 14 are disposed in the path ofv travel of the eye portions of the attracting element so that the water'on the attracting element will be taken up by the absorbent material. The spring at the top-of each receptacle 14 is disposed in the path of the eye portion of the attracting element so as to engage the same to cause a rebounding ac tion to assist the attracting element to obtain a reverse movement. By providing the obstruction on the balance rod of the attracting element the water will be held against flowing longitudinally onto the rod.
lVhile the motor described herein is de signed primarily for use in connection with a sign of the character set forth, it will be understood that the motor may be put to any use where motion is to be applied to a movable element, shaft or the like.
I claim:
1. A motor comprising a capillary discharge tube, a collector, and a member movable between the discharge tube and collector respectively.
2. A motor comprising a capillary discharge tube, an absorbent element, and a member movable between thedischarge tube and absorbent element respectively.
3. A motor comprising a capillary dis charge tube, an absorbent element, and a member movable between the absorbent element and discharge tube respectively and provided with means receiving liquid from the discharge tube through adhesion and conveying the liquid to the absorbent element.
4;. A motor comprising a capillary discharge tube, a collector and a member movable between the discharge tube and the collector, said movable member consisting of a balance rod an extremity of which is constructed in the form of-an eye adapted to hold by adhesion a quantity of liquid received from the discharge tube upon contact therewith.
5. A motor'comprising a capillary discharge tube, a collector and a member movable between the discharge tube and the collector, said collector consisting of a container and a covering of absorbent material adapted to relieve said movable memberof its load of liquid upon contacting with same.
6. A motor comprising a capillary discharge tube, a collector, a member movable between the discharge tube and the collector, and a resilient member attached to said collector and disposed in the path of the movable member to engage the same and by a rebounding action assist said movable element in obtaining a reverse movement.
