To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH Soss, a. citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State. of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to hinges for doors and other swinging devices, and particularly to what are known as invisible hinges of the class described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent #1,009,108, granted to me Nov. 21, 1911, also #1,011,512 granted to me Dec. 12,1911, also #1,019,096, granted to me March. 5,1912. These hinges and others of this class are used in connection with a stationary frame or support and a swinging door or like member, and the said door or like member may be made according to the construction of the hinge, as shown in the to swing in either or both directions; and the object of this in vention is to provide improved means for securing the hinge in or to the stationary frame or support whereby the swinging member or door may be quickly and easily detached from the frame .or support, and as quickly. and easily replaced whenever necessary, a further object being to provide a hinge of the class specified which is particularly adapted for use in connection with the doors of automobiles or similar vehicles,

and the construction and operation of which is such that the swinging member or door may be easily detached with the operative parts of the hinge or hinges connected therewith whenever it is desired to wash or clean the automobile will be prevented from the operative parts of the hinge, and also from entering the mortises or recess in the frame or support of the door and into which parts of the hinge are inserted when mounting the door; a further object being to provide a hinge box or casing which is secured in the frame or support of the door and and whereby water entering or wetting adapted to receive the corresponding hinge butt or member with the operative parts connected therewith, and into. which'the cor responding hinge butt or member ma be easily inserted in the mounting of the door, and whereby the door may be unmounted or detached without injury to the frame or support, whenever necessary or desired; a

In the drawing forming part of this specification, .I have shown at a a part of a door frame and at b a part of a door, and in the practice of my invention, I provide, a

hinge butt 0. adapted to be secured to or in' the door 6 and a hinge butt d adapted to be secured to or in the door frame a, and I also provide a hinge box or casing e which is adapted to be inserted into a corresponding mortise in the door frame and to receive the hinge butt (1, as hereinafter described.

The hinge butt 0 is the same as the corresponding hinge butt shown in Fig. 4: of Patent #1,019,096, and is provided with rigid arms-o any desired number of which may be employed, links a which are pivoted to the ends of said arms, and L-shaped links 0* which are pivoted to said arms at 0 all these parts being similar to corresponding parts shown in said patent.

The hinge butt d comprises a body portion d having a central rectangular recess or chamber d which opens through one side thereof and through the face thereof, thus forming two face plates (1* which project beyond the opposite side edges of the body portion, and said recess or chamber is provided with a back d which does not extend entirely to the face of said butt, but terminates at d and is provided with curved ribs d parallel with the side edges of said body portion, and said side edges of said body portion are rounded or made semicircular in cross section, as indicated at d and the face plates (1 are provided with screw holes d The hinge box or casing e which I employ comprises a face plate 6 having a body portion e provided centrally with a rectangular 'recess or chamber e which opens through the face plate, and also through one side of the body portion and the opposite side of which is provided with a supplemental recess 6 the'back'wall of which is curved inwardly and backwardly, as shown in Fig. 5, and the longitudinal or vertical dimensions of which are less than the longitudinal or vertical dimensions of the recess or chamber e, and the top and bottom walls of the chamber or recess e are curved or semi-circular, as shown at e, to correspond with the form of the side edges 01 of the body portion of the butt d. and the face of the box or casing e is provided wlth recesses e" to receive the face plates oZ of the butt d, and in the bottoms of which are screw holes a to receive screws passed through the screw holes d in said faceplates.

The back or side of the body of the butt d opposite the side which is open is provided at the top and bottom thereof with ribs or projections d, and the open side of the box or casing e is providedwith corresponding grooves e to receive said ribs or pro ections, and as thus constructed the butt d may be inserted into the box or casing e, which it will snugly fit, and said box or casing will be securely closed at all points, except the chamber or recess thereof which opens through the face thereof, and into which the arms 0 of the butt 0 pass and in which the link members 0 and a are movable, and in practice the links 0 and 0* are pivoted between the ribs d of the butt (1 by means of pins f which are passed vertically therethrough and through the back of said butt. The arms; a of the butt 0 and the back wall of the chamber or recess e are so formed that when the door is closed the backs of said arms, orthat portion thereof adjacent to the butt 0, press against said wall, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, and the position of the links 0 is such that there is a. binding action between the separate parts of the hinge and a lateral thrust which absolutely prevents the door from moving away from the frame in the plane thereof, but at the same time the said door will be free to swing, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5.

Although I have described the box or casing 6 as particularly adapted for use in, or in connection with the frame or support, the said box or casing may be used in connection with the door, and in Fig. 6 I have shown a modification of the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, in which said boxer casing is used in connection with both the door frame and the door, and in which a hinge construction is shown similarto that shown and described in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive of Patent #1,019,096, hereinbefore referred to, with the exception that the hinge butts employed are the butts d. In other words the hinge butts shown in Fig. 6 are similar to, or the same as, the butts shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and these butts are employed in connection with corresponding boxes or casings e. The movable parts of the hinge shown in Fig. 6 however, are the same as the movable parts shown in Figs. 1 to 3 of Patent #1,019,096, and comprises S-shaped floating links 9 'which' extend into both the' door and the frame, when the door is closed, and to the ends of which are pivoted lock links it said links being pivoted to the butts d in both the door and the frame, as shown at h and L-shaped links a which are pivoted to the but-ts at 2' and to the floating links 9 at i the construction and connection of these link members being the same as in said patent, and with this construction the door may swing in both directions as shown and described in said patent.

With the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, it will be understood, that the door butt of the hinge is permanently secured to the door, while the frame buttof the hinge is permanently secured, when in use, in the box or casing 6, but may be detached therefrom whenever desired; while in the construction shown in. Fig. 6 the door butt of the hinge and the frame but-t of the hinge are both detachably secured in the boxes or casings e which are secured in the door and frame by means of screws passed through holes in the face plates of said boxes .or casings.

It will be understood that this invention is not limited to the details of the construction of what are called the movable parts of the hinge herein shown and described, nor the exact details of the construction of the box' or casing e, and the butt or butts d, and various changes therein and modifications thereof, may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hinge comprising two butt members connected by movable parts and one of which, when in use, is adapted to swing in a horizontal plane, and a horror casing ada ted to be'secured in a support and into which I one of'said butts is adapted to be inserted,

and'to'be detachably secured thereon.

2. A hinge comprising two butt members ,connected by parts, some of which are movable, and one of which, when in use, is

adapted'to swing in a horizontal plane, and.

a box or casing adapted to be secured in a support, one-of said butts being adapted to be inserted into said box or detachably secured therein.

3. A hinge comprising two butt members connected by movable parts, and boxes or casings adapted to be secured to a support and to a swlnging device, said butt members being adapted to be inserted into said boxes or casings and to be detachably secured therein.
