To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BURTON E. CLIFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iola, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in fence-posts.
The invention has for its object to promote durability or longevity in use of the ost.
A further object is to insure position of the post.
A still further object is to carry out these ends in a simple, inexpensive and effective manner.
The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made as relates to the detailed construction and arrangement of t-he parts without departing from the spirit of the invention. Figure 1 is an elevation of the post. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. L1 is a section taken on the line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a transverse section of a modification of the invention.
In carrying out my invention, I suitably stability of dispose or employ a tubular member 1,
which may be a pipeesection of the gas-pipe type, or it may be a rod. This member, pipe or rod 1 is inserted or anchored at its lower end in a short or stub member 2 preferably of tiling, of considerably greater cross-section or diameter than said member 1, the anchoring medium being preferably some adhesive fibrous cement 3 filled in between said members 1 and 2, as seen particularly in Fig. 1. The short or stub tubular member 2, thus lled or connected to the pipe or rod member 1, serves, as intimated, as an anchor or weight for securing the post in stable position, the anchoring member 2 being in practice, buried in an excavation or hole suitably produced in the ground.
Suitably inclosing or receiving the rod or pipe member 1, is preferably a section of clay pipe or drain tile 4, and within the space intermediate these, is inserted a filling 5 of the same kind of material or cement as above referred to, for the greater stability of said members or parts. Around the tiling or clay member is, or may be, suitably wound or wrapped burlap 6, or the like, or the tiling or clay member may be omitted, and the burlap be applied directly to the iron member 1, said burlap being suitably saturated with cement such as described for effecting the filling intermediate the members 1 and 2. Applied to the burlap 6 is a wire-meshed or reticulated material 7 encompassing the same, the parts thus assembled being placed in what may be termed an open-faced mold, and into the latter is poured the same 1 kind of material or cement heretofore referred to, the inclosing coating of cement 8 thus provided, uniting with the filling 3 within the tiling 2, and completing the formation of the post. The thus formed post is provided with numerous holes into which are inserted pieces of preferably annealed wire, forming staple-like connections 9 therebetween and the fence-wire, the latter being suitably connected or wired thereto preferably as shown.
The post is preferably treated or dipped, after the cement has sufficiently hardened or aged to handle, into an enameling solution of any desired color, thus providing for closing all pores against ingress of mois ture and accordingly rendering it proof against the disintegrating action of the elements.
It is noted that the stub or foot tile member 2 may be omitted by simply applying the cement to, and forming a corresponding enlargement directly upon the post, of the cement.
In the modification as suggested by Fig. 6, it will be observed that the clay-pipe or tile is omit-ted, but the burlapmember retained; in other respects the disclosure being the same as suggested by Fig. 1.
A fence post is thus produced which is characterized for great strength, freedom from the usual deteriorating action of the weather, etc., durability, stability and strength, as well as being inexpensive of manufacture and readily applied for use.
