METAL FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. I, 1915.
Application filed October 25, 1916. Serial No. 127,560.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD L. CUSHING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tiskilwa, in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois, have invented certain useful Improvements invMetal Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmg.
This invention relates to improvements in metal fence posts, one object of the invention being the provision of a fence post made of galvanized steel in the form of a strip, the same being provided with a longitudinally-disposed channel which reinforces the strip and at the same time is provided with line wire receiving members formed integrally therewith.
A further object of this invention is the I provision of a metalfence post made of galvanized steel in the form of a strip, the anchoring end of which is formed by slitting the end and bending the portions ad-- jacent to the slit in opposite directions, so that the post may be properly anchored within the ground, or when used with cement bases may securely attach the post thereto.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a simple, durable and inexpensive'metal fence post which is thoroughly efiicient and practical in use.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of the com.- plete fence post. r
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.-
Fig. 3 is a cross section through the body of the post. v
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the post proper which is made from a single sheet or strip of slightly tapered sheet metal, the same being provided with the longitudinal depression 6 which forms a reinforcement for the post throughout its length.
Formed in the recessed portion through- V .out the length thereof are integral prongs or tangs 7 and openings 8, the tangs constituting members for surrounding the line wire 9 to clamp the same and maintain the line wire relatively to the post. The free ends of the tangs 7 are to be bent and their free ends inserted through the openings 8 i so that a receptacle for the line wire-s is provided. Where'stiips of wood are employed, the bolts or other securing meansare passed through theopenings 8.
The lower end of the post is provided with the slit 10 so that the members 11 and 12 thereof may be bent in opposite directions and at right angles to the body of the post to constitute anchoring feet. In this manner the anchoring members may be buried in the ground When setting the posts, or may be placed in a mold to receive the concrete footing or anchor that surrounds the same.
By providing the post with the reinforcement 6 throughout the length thereof, the post is properly reinforced and cannot be readily bent or twisted, and such reinforcement may be formed by stamping in one operation.
What I claim as new is A device of the class described made from a single sheet of metal formed with a longitudinal central' channel-shaped portion, the side portions joining said channel-shaped portion being arranged in alinement, said side portions being bent in opposite directions and at right angles upon themselves to provide supporting feet, saidv right angular feet being rectangular in outline and having their inner longitudinal edges in alinement so as to cause one side and back wall of said channel-shaped portion to engage and be supported upon one foot and to cause the other foot to project across the plane of said channel-shaped member, and integral means on said channel-shaped portion for clamping Wire.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
