To all 'tlltUHZ 2'15 may concern Be it known that I, \VILEY EnMoNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Bicknell. in the county of Knox and btate of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spike-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to spike pullers, and more particularly to the class of devices for extracting railroad spikes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device in which a spike may be firmly clamped when holdin a railway rail fastened to a tie, whereby t 1e spike may be quickly and easily extracted from the tie with the least possi ile leverage.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which a spike, when driven into a tie or other base for the fastening of a rail or the like, may be fully extracted from the tie or other foundation in a single operation, without bending or otherwise damaging such spike.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, strong, durable, possessing few parts, etlicient and reliable in operation, and inexpensive 1n manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmeutary perspective view of a cross tie, rail and spike, with the device in operative relation to said spike. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the spike extracted. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary to plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of l i 3. Fig. I) is a perspective view of the 11(jllStIthl0 fulcrum member.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, the device com irises a lever or handle 5, preferably of tie form shown, having a curvature (3 intermediate its ends to provide an angularly disposed lower extremity 7, the same being of rectangular shape in cross section, and at the outer end thereof, on opposite sides of the same, are bolted or other- Specification of Letters Patent.

wise secured yoke-like strap irons 8, in which are loosely engaged jaw members 9, each being formed with a medial outwardly bowed portion 10, while at one end is provided a chisel-edged terminal 11, and at its opposite end is formed an outturned angularly disposed extension 12, the loop-like strap irons 8 being adapted to traverse the medial bowed portion 10 of the jaws for the opening and closing thereof when disengaging the same from or engaging therewith the spike 13, as will be presently described. The angularly disposed extensions 12 obviate the necessity of pivoting the jaw members 9 and prevent the said jaw members from being ulled from the strap irons when the device is in use.
Formed on the lower ends of the jaw members 9 are upwardly curved laterally extending nose projections 14, forming bearing seats 15 for a yoke ring or endless link 16 surroundin the jaw members 9 to hold the same against spreading apart too far when acted upon by the strap irons 8, on the raising or lowering of the lover or handle 5 during the operation of the device.
Slidably mounted upon the lower angular extremity 7 of the lover or handle is a guide yoke 17 carrying a fulcrum block 18, which, when ad 'usted longitudinally on the said extremity is adapted to rest upon the ball of the rail 19, so that upon depressing the handle or lever B, the jaw members i) will be brought together, whereby the chisel-edges 11 will engage and bite into the spike l3, and on the continued dowmvard pressure on the lever or handle 5, such spike will be pulled from the cross tie 20, in which the same is driven. However, should the spike be hold fast, the fulcrum block 18 will be shifted, so that the guide yoke 17 thereof will be )ositioned in the bight or curvature 0, there y enabling the free end of the fulcrum block 18 to contact with the web of the rail 19, so that on downward )ressure upon the lover or handle 5, the spi e 13 will respond to the pull exerted thereon for its extraction from the cross tie, as will be clearly obvious. It will be noted that the jaws will readily adjust themselves for clamping different sizes of spikes.
What is claimed is:
A spike extractor, comprising a lever having anangularly disposed end of squared formation in cross section, outwardly bent yoke-like straps fixed to opposite sides of said angular end at the outer extremity thereof, a fulcrum arm adapted to lie beneath the said angular end and having a loop slidably engaging the said angular end, outwardly bowed jaw members loosely engaged in said yoke-like straps, angular extensions formed on the said jaw members for preventing the disengagement thereof from the yoke-like straps when pulled upon,
10 laterally projecting upwardly curved noses formed on the outer sides of the jaw members, and an endless loop surrounding the said jaw members and adapted to rest upon the said noses.
