Letters Patent No. 103,352, dated May 24, 1870.
NEcTIcUT.
IMPRovEMn'NT 1N POCKET CUTLERY.
`The Schedule referrei to in these Letters P atent and-making of the same Figure 1 represents a knife having the covering ot" the handle attached to the scales by screws.
Figure 2'is another view ofthe same with the covering 0i' one side removed.
Figure 3 isla side vieivof a knife, showing the scale with cover removed, and the mode of securing the scale, back spring, and blade'together. l
Our invention relates tothe manufacture of pocketcutlery, and consists in a method ot' first'irmly securing the scale to the back spring and to the blade of pocket-imite, so that the strain in using vthe knife `shall all be exerted upon vthose rivets, or that part of the rivets which so, secure -thescales lto the back spring and' to-the blade; and the covering of wood, pearl, or other material is afterward secured to the scales by screws or rivets, so that said covering is not liable to receive any strain from the rivetswhich secure 'the parts ofthe `kniie together, and thereby bccome broken. y
In the mannicture of pocket cutlery it has heretoy forebeen the prac-tice to secure allthe parts of a knife togetherwith' one set of rivets; that is to say, the
scales are secured to the back spring and blade by rivets passing through them, and projecting through sufficiently ar to extend through the covering and be riveted upon each c| 1dup,ou tin.l outside of' the covering. V l
When made in this waygah the strainand working of the rivets operates to crack or break the covering, especially if made of ivory, pearl, or other britt-le material, and it the coveringis made of soft material, such as wood, and perhaps vhardlrubber, the strain of .l
the rivets upon the covering is so great as to cause the heads ot the rivets to work down into the covering and all the partsof the knife then become loose.
The object of our invention is to obviate thisob gestion, and produce a knife which is firm, and yet which has no strain exerted upon the covering to the handle, the scales themselves bearing all the strain of` the rivets.
v.lhat others skilled iu the art may be able to make and use "our invention, we will procecdto describe its c c represent the scales, which aresecured to the back spring l'by means 0f the rivets n, which ae headed down flush with the outside of the scales c.
'lhc blade b is secured in place by the rivet e, which is alsoA headed down upon the scales c, so that, when the rivets-are all headed down, the outside of the scales shall present a generally flat surface. Y y Holes t', having a screw-thread cut therein', are then made iu the scales c, and corresponding holes are made in the covering a, which may be of wood, pearl, hard rubber, or any other ,desirable material, and the said covering. may then be 'attached to the scales by small screwsipassing through thc covering d into thc threaded holesif.
It will be seep that iu this device the working parts of lthe knife are fully operative without the covering a, which is attached for the sake of appearance, a-nd to give a smooth and desirable form., c
Then attached in this way, the--eovering'wll not split 01 crack at the points where it is riveted to theI` scales, as there is no strain at those points, while all the rivets which secure the scales, back spring, and
blade together, being headed rmly down against the v scales'c, the knife is made much stronger and stiffer than when made in the usual manner. v 1
When made according to our improved method, as
herein described, there is no necessity of any bolster at the end of the handle to which to head the rivet 'securing the blade, and, as there is no necessity of finishing down the head of' that rivet, it is not'so liable to give way or become loose, as the head of the rivet under the covering a maybe as large and strong as desirable, without injuring t-he appearance of the knife in the least.
IVe are aware that the covering to the scales oi' pocket-cutlery has been secured to the saine by turn ing the edge ofthe scales over the edge of vthe covering, as shown in Letters Patent granted to O. H.Pal mei-,April 30, 1867, and we do not claim the same,
nor any partthereoi", but, having thus described our invention, l
Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure lby Let- .ters Patent, is-
An improvement in Y pocket-cutlery, wherein the blade l1 and back spring L are first secured or riveted t0 the scales c c, and the covering aafterward secured to the scales c by means of small screws or rivets, substantially as herein described.
