`Leners Patent No. 103,339, dated May 2 4, 1870.
IMPRQVED WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letton Patent and making lpaurt of the same.
l 'Figure 4, atop viewthereof.
The nature-ofmyinvention consists in thc combination of a dasher, its operative .cranked shaft, slide-rods, and `rocker-shaft, with a curi-ed stationary apron and a yielding perforated abutment or wash-board, arranged` in the .tub or suds-reserroir, substantially in t manner as hereinafter described," and as represented. a
Also, in the arrangement `-and combination of adjustable side barsor pieces ,with the-dasher and tub.
Also, in the combination .of a screw-shaft or spindle and its vnuts and spring with-th'e yielding or sliding abutment, the dasher, and its peculiar operative mechanism, arranged as,'and applied t-o the'tu-b in mannelas hereinafter explained.
In the said drawingscurved stationaryaln'on or chute, B, to operate with the dasher O. 4 p,
-The said. dasher 'G a rectangular board, uted transversely, and provided with two adjustable wings orside boards, la a, which are held tolitby screws b b going through slots, c c, made laterallyin such boards.
As the said side boards may 'become worn on their outer edges from time :to time, they may be set, up
nearer to the sides of the tub,so as to vcause the dasher to operate therewith as'closely as possible. l `The said dasher,.while in operation, has an ellipti-l cal or compound motion. At its rear it is pivoted to the bell-crank.
Furthermorehom `'the upper-edge of the dasher, two rods, f f,"-project,`and extend .throng-h holes in al rocker--shaft, g, pivoted to two standards, hflt, erected on theftubr- I .The-curveof `apron corresponds with, or about with, that made by cheff-lower edge of the dasher while passin'gacrosstbe, said apron.` :The apron, however,
is arranged so that, as thedasherdescends byand along it, the space between it Anml'the dasher may widen a lit-tie, so' as to prevent the clothes from being ycuight between the two.
In front of the dasher there is'arranged in the tub Va movable wash-board or abutment, E, so applied to the tub as to be capable of being moved longitudinally therein.
'L hsWaSh-board is perdura-ted with numerous holes, my my extended through it transversely. 'i
A screwed spindle, F, projects, from the abutment E, and goes through the end ofthe tub, and carries a.
helical spring, G, so applied to the spindle and the tub' as to operate to force `the abutment forward,'infor-der .to restore it'to'its normal position after each advance of the dasher.
IThis spindle is held to the abutment byJiaring its,
screw ltr-extended through a cross-bar, i, of. the abut# ment, and, being provided `with two nuts,"i t', screwed upon the screw, and aga-inst opposite sides ot such bar.
. The screw and nuts serve to regulate the distance of the abutment from the dasher or either end 0i' thc tub.
l,By revolving thc hand-crank e, the dasher will be putin operation, and, at every revolution of the crank,
v `will not only be ,moved forward andbaclm'ard, but up-v y A denotes an oblong tub tir-reservoir", for holding the washinglliquor, such reserroirlhaving, vat one end,
andarranged. above its bottom, as-reprcsented, a
ward and downwardwithin the tub, it' thus having an elliptical or peculiar compound mot-ion imparted to it highly favoraile for washing clothes when placed be -`tween it and the abutment.
` During an advance ot' the dasher' it will drive the watera-nd clothes down lthe apron, and forward toward and against.tlieabutmcnt, an'd will lift or roll .the
clothes up,,and squeeze -themagaiust the abutment, .LA
and force the water through 'it and the clothes.
During the retreat or rearward motions of thedasher,
the water or washiugliquid will rush back with the,
clothes.
Bycthe action of .the dasher, the clothes will be turnedover-and over` and forward against'the abut"- ment, whereby they will be rei-y thoroughly washed, the abutment yielding to the pressure as occasion may require. m y I elaim, in the imprevedwashing-machine, as 'der scribed, the combination and' arrangement of the .dasher-C, with its adjusting side boards a a, th'e'operlative crank-shaft'l), slide-rods ff, rock-shatt'g, apronv B, yielding abutment E, with its screw-spindle F, nuts i t, and spring G, as shown, for the purpose set forth.
