Description

s ANGELOOATT @anni diffide, l-
ANEO, `or AlsrEwarus NEW JERSEY, AsslcNoE ToEIMsE'LE s AND HENRY LEEonn-or SAME PLACE.
Letters .Paltent No. 104,424, dated .Tune 21, 1870.
"j IMPRQYEMENT mm/immune PoR remmer HATS.
The Schedule referred to in these LeetrsPatexit and making part cf the same 1 o all w'iom t ymayconcern;` Be ist known that I, ANGELO CATTANEO, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State `of New Jersey,
have invented a certain new and usefulImproveme'nt in Machines for Felting Hat-Bodies, &c.,'and thefolf `lowing is hereby declaredto be a fullandcorrectl de` scription ofthe same.
The object of `this invention isto felt hat-bodies, f&c.,by arubbing and working operation by machinery', ina mannen similar tothe operation performed by hand, in felting andshrinking such articles; and
Said invention consists in passing the articles to be feltedbetween a ievolvingcylinder of yielding slats and a segmentahshell,` (also .composed of slats,) to
which a short, quick, oscillating or reciprocating lnovement is given.` ,l i a 1 The slats, bothjof the 'cylinder' and shell, being corrugated, .said shellv acts as a rubber, ,to detain 'and rub -the articles passingbetween said cylinder and shell, andfeltssuch articles bysaid rubbing action in a very even 'and uniform manner,r in consequence of s 'i the yieldingaction `of the cylinder slats, and but'little a or no hand-labor wili be required 'upon the hats after coming from the machine. i
In the.di"awing i i s Y, l Figure 1 is aplan of my said machine, 4and Figure2is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. The head of the cylinder of slats is represented as broken away,'to showthe parts more clearly.
s a is the frame of the machine, with the standards b` b ylisingfrom, theupper part ofthe same, and fitted with boxes b', to receilvethe shaft'c of thecylinder d. This cylinder d is composed of the heads ce and slats i i ff, and said slats arecorrugated lengthwise of .the cylinder. a i Y 'lhe'heads c, are formed with the-ring flanges h h,
l to receive the guide-rods@ i of the slats j, and said over the shaft c, and on this shaft said shell and frame are suspended, and oscillate as motion is communivcated to the same bythe links o oaud cranksp on the i shaft q. Y
The shell l and lower part of the cylinder d are subi merged in water in the trough p', and said water is ,kept at theproper temperature by steam heat, and for'thi's'purposesteam-pipes may pass into said trough or` tank in any convenient manner.
The hat-bodies or other articles to be felted are fed "to the machine over the table g', and betweenthe cyl` inder d and shell l, and by said cylinder d will be Lpassed along and over the shell'l; but, during their passage between said cylinder and shell,su'ch articles will be subjected to a rubbing action against said `cylinder, causedby the reciprocating movement of saidv shell, and suoli rubbing ,action will felt or full the articles under operation in the most even and perfect manner, and such 4operation will be'similar to that- 'performed on the same by hand.
' The artieles,- as passed over the end of the shell I, fall onto the inclined table or chute w, and pass to the frontof the machine, to beremoved from the same, or passed through the machine again, if necessary.
The shell] may be adjusted nearer to or flirt-her from the cylinder d'by means ofthe screws t.
Motion may be communicated .to the cylinder L in any desired way. I have shown the shaft x, to which power may be applied, and by the belt 3, and gearing 4 and 5, rotation is given to said cylinder.v y
A belt, v6, and pulleys, give motion to the shaftq. I I claim as my inventionl. The revolving cylinder of yielding slats, in com- .bination' with the adjustable suspended oscillating shell of' nslats andthe water-box, substantially as and for the purposes specified. f l
2. lhe chuteor trough p', to return the hats, ar-
ranged in relation to the aforesaid cylinderand-shell,
in the manner and for the purposes specified.
Signed by me this`25'th day of April, A. D. 1870.
I f ANGELO CATTANEO.
