Be it known that I, DAIiIUs N. BARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in thecounty of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to safety razors-and the object of the invention is the provision .of a device of this character whereby the blade may be readily detached from and attached to the back and be used in the manner of the. ordinary straight blade razor.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel safety guard adaptedto be used in connection with thisrazor and which is also readily connected to and dis connected from the razor back.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents an ordinary handle to which is pivotally secured a blade are 2. This back has a reduced extension 3 forming a shoulder i and, adjacent its upper edge, is inwardly tapered, as shown at 5, and its upper edge provided with a concave groove 6. Rolled upon the extension 3 and having its inner end abutting the shoulder 4 is a blade clamp 7 which is substantially U- shaped in cross section and has inwardly extending ribs 8 and converging extensions 9 beyond the ribs. These extensions form a channel way for the reception of the blade 10 which is slid into the channel until its inner end abuts the shoulder 4. The blade is thus removably held in position, and in this manner the razor may be used in the ordinary fashion without the safety device, to be now described, although in this type handle back and blade clamp which is adapted to hold one of the plurality of blades furnished with the outfit.

The safety guard comprises a strip of metal 11 having upon one edge a. plurality of downwardly and outwardlycurved teeth 12 and at itsinner side. is turned inwardly to form a rib 13 which engages in the channels produced in forming the ribs 8. In the opposite ends of'the plate U-shaped hooks or clamping members 14. are formed which have inward extensions 15 to engage in the channels produced in forming the ribs 8, and these hooks are adapted to snap up over the blade clamp, so as to hold theguard plate with the teeth resting approximately on the edge of the blade. The ends of the teeth slightly overlap the edge of the blade so that when the blade is held at an angle to the face in shaving the teeth will engage the face and prevent accidental cutting. The teeth and the guard also bear upon-the blade in opposition to the direction of.- the pressure exerted in shaving, and therefore strain is relieved'from the guard clamp to a great extent. -Both the safety guard and the blade clamp are of spring steel, preferably rolled into their respective outlines.

'Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is z- A safety razor comprising ahandle, ',a back member pivoted thereto and having its upper side edges inwardly curved and its inner edge grooved, a substantially U-shaped clamping device removably mounted on the back member and having its sidesconforming to the sides of the back member, and provided with converging legs to clamp and fit a concave blade, a blade mounted in the clamping member and seated in the grooved back member, a safety guard, and U-shaped spring hooks formed integral therewith and conforming to and adapted to clamp over the clamping member.
