onrran srarns PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. FISH, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. FISH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Vfashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Shut-Offs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus of the above type, having particular reference to an apparatus of this character wherein the weight of the material or fluid fed or discharged is applied to operate the shut-ofl' means, and has for a fundamental object the provision of a novel construction wherein a receiving receptacle is connected with the shut-off mechanism for operating the latter to its closed position by gravity.
Other objects will be set forth as my description progresses, and those features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts on which I desire protection, succinctly defined in my annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout: Figure 1 is a vertical section of a preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 illustrates my invention as in use, the same being connected with a pipe which may be in communication with a source of supply at a remote point, and Fig. 3 is a perspective of my device connected with a suitable supply tank, the latter being shown fragmentarily.
In this the preferred embodiment of my invention, I provide a flexible feed tube 1, the same extending between opposing jaws 2 and 3, which latter are free for movement toward and from one another to thereby control the delivery through tube 1. Jaws 2 and 3 are connected with respective spring arms 4 which serve to return and hold the same in their open positions.
Reference numerals 5 indicate arms projecting outwardly from jaws 2 and 3 and connected, as by links 6 with a receiving receptacle 7 extending beneath delivery member 1.
My invention is designed primarily for maintaining a constant and substantially uniform fresh supply of drinking water for young fowl, and as now constructed can be readily applied to brooders. I do not how Specificationof letters Patent.

Serial No. 660,155.
ever, desire to be understood as limiting my invention to this particular application.
As now considered, arms 5 comprise the free end portions of astrip of spring sheet metal which at the inner end portions of said arms is given a reverse bend to provide the jaws 2 and 3 and then bent to substantially circular form to provide the arms a which, as shown, are united at their upper end portions and suitably apertured for reception of a nipple 8 of a coupling member 9 adapted to be connected with a suitable source of fluid supply, as for example, a tank 10 or supply pipe 11. Coupling member 9 is formed with a shoulder 12 on which the shut off mechanism is clamped by a suitable nut, as 13.
Reference numeral 14 indicates a guard for the lower end portion of delivery tube 1, the same being carried by one oft-he arms 5 and receiving said tube so as to protect the same against injury by the fowls, as will be readily understood. I
In the operation of my invention, spring arms a will open jaws 2 and 3 as the weight or quantity of fluid in receptacle 7 is decreased, thereby permitting of member 1 opening for passage of fluid from the source of supply therethrough.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of Amer- 1ca, 1s:
1. In apparatus of the character described, opposing jaws a flexible discharge means extending between said jaws, a support for said jaws having a depending spring arm carrying one thereof and tending to hold the latter in its retracted position, and a suspended receptacle connected with said last named jaw for closing the same through the weight imposed by the material received from said discharge means.
2. In apparatus of the character described, a flexible discharge means, means for shutting off said discharge means through compression of the same comprising opposing jaws, means yieldingly holding saidjaws in retracted position, and a receptacle suspended from said jaws for closing the same through the weight imposed by the material received from said first means.
3. In apparatus of the character described, opposing jaws, a bowed resilient Signed at Seattle, Washington this 7th connecting member for said jaws, a flexible day of November 1911.
dischar e means extendin between said jaws, o utwardly projecting arms to said CHARLES FISH jaws, a receiving receptacle arranged be- Witnesses:
neath said discharge means, and means for ARLITA ADAMS,
suspending said receptacle from said arms. CLARA A. HARM.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
