PROPHYLACTIC DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed May 6, 1916. Serial No. 95,776.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONDY C. GALLAGHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Manayunk, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Prophylactic Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates particularly to such dispensing devices as may be employed in connection with a toilet. flush to introduce prophylactic agents into the water used in flushing the bowl.
It is well lmown that disease is readily contracted by the common use, especially in public places, of toilet devices, and that typhoid fever germs are particularly susceptible of being carried by the water lying in such devices.
. The principal objects of my invention are, to prevent the spread of disease in this manner by-providing mechanism which may be cooperatively connected with the flushing apparatus to automatically antisepticize the water employed for flushing purposes.
Other objects of m invention are, to provide simple and e 'cient mechanism that will perform the function desired, without care or attention other than maintaining it charged with the antisepticizing agent.
My invention further comprehends means for efiecting the discharge of a predetermined quantity of the antisepticizing agent into the water in the flushing tank each time the flushing mechanism is actuated, irrespective of the length of time said flushing mechanism is held open by the user.
Specifically stated, the form of my invention as hereinafter described comprises mechanism adapted to be attached to a flush tank, and has a reservoir in which the antisepticizing agent may be stored, a valve hav ing means connected with the flushing apparatus arranged to release a predetermined quantity of said agent from said reservoir when said flushing apparatus is actuated to flush the bowl, and means for arresting said released antisepticizing agent until the water in said tank reaches a predetermined level. My invention also includes all of the various novel features of construction and ar-' in section for convenience of illustration;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment shown in Fig. 1, showing only a fragment of the tank; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal View of a modification of my invention; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a modification ofbthe valve for controlling the conveyor tu e.
In said figures, the toilet flush tank 1, which is of a well-known construction, comprises the inlet pipe 2 and the outlet pipe 3, and has the rock-shaft 5 provided with the rocker arms 6 and 7, respectively connected by the rod 8 with the operating knob 9, and by the rod 10 with the rod 11 of the float valve 12, which is seated on the outletvalve 13.
The prophylactic attachment to which my invention specifically relates comprises the bracket 15 arranged to be attached to the side of the tank 1, and has the flange 16 forming a cup arranged to receive the cylindrical receptacle 17, preferably formed of glass, and having the spiral tubular coil 19 for holding and conveying spherical antisepticizing pills 20.
The pills 20 are fed into the tank 1, one by one, by valve mechanism comprising the valve casing 21, having the inlet 22 connected with the lower end of the coil 19, as shown in Fig.1, and controlled by the slide valve 23 which has the aperture 24 arranged to register with said inlet 22 when moved toward the left in Fig. 1, in opposition to the spring 25 by the rocking of the rock-shaft 5, which carries the rocker arm 26 connected by the rod 27 with said valve 23. V
The movement of the valve 23 to open the inlet 22 permits the pill 20 adjacent thereto to drop through the aperture 29 into the conveyer tube 30 which extends into the tank 1, and which has the clack-valve 31 at its discharge end arranged to arrest the pills 20 which are delivered thereto by the slide valve 23. V
The clack-valve 31 is arranged to be opened to discharge the arrested pill into the cage orbasket 32 which-iis'carried' by saidaconveyer tube- 30,.byvmeanscone trolled by the rise and fall of the waterv33 in the tank 1, and comprising the bifurcated lever 34 pivoted to'the tube 30 upon trun=- nions 35 and having prongs 36 extending loosely through apertures 37 in said valve, asbest shown in Fig. 2.
' Said lever 34 'isconnected by the rod 38' with the float 39, which isiarrangedv-stoirises;v
and fall within a limited range with the rise and fallrof theuwater 33;.-.it being obvious-that when the-Waterfalls said-float also falls to the position indicatediby dot and i dash lines, thus marrying; the: lever a 34 andvivalve 31 tor the; position similarly indi cated to open said valve 31 and therebydis charge the pill 20- into the-cage 32afterthe= water has. fallen .zbelow the lower end: of said: icage;
In order to feed the pills 20 one or more at a time; i the valve 23' carries a finger- 10 ex- 7 tending upwardly throughtheslot 41 inthe valve casing 21- :and J turned rparallel with the axis: ofzsaidavalve. and-arranged :to be thrust through the alined apertures 42 intheaoutlet 22; which are disposedv'in: such positionathat said finger =40 will v be thrust between the ipillsv 20 and hold those wpills above said finger from entering the valve when opened; I
It will be obvious that when the knob 9 is manually forced downward, the shaft'5 is rocked to shift the-valve 23 into open position, whereupon the pill 20 adjacent thereto will be releasedto dropinto the-conveyer' 3O andis arrested by-theclack-valve 31 until the" water 33 hasdropped below the lower end tithe cage 32, when the weight of the fioat-j39 opens said clack-valve 31 and permits the pill 20 to dropinto the cage-32toantisepticize' the water 33 when it again rises,-as
shown in Fig? 1.
The form of my invention shown in Fig. 3 is adapted to dispense a liquid-antiseptic into the tank-45, and comprises the'reservoir 4:6 havingjits; funnel-shaped bottom: 4L7 provided-with 'theoutlet 48 controlled by the valve 4E9'having the aperture 50 arranged to register with' {said-' outlet 7 and "having the aperture51. in the'opposite Wall disposed-in staggered relation and arranged :to register with the" aperture '52 in the conveyer tube 535 Said valve is spring-actuatedflin the same manner as the valve shown in Figlyl.
Theconveyer tube 55 shown in Fig.4 is provided with the spring valve 56' arranged to control the outlet 57 and is :actuatedby the float.59 to" which it is'connected' by the rod 60'; r
I donot desire to limit my invention to theprecise details'of-constructionand arrangement as herein shown, as it isobvious that various-modifications may'be made therein witho departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appendedrclaims;v A
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
