Be it known that I, MORRIS WV. PooL, citizen of the United States,and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York. have invented certain new and useful Imp1w..ements in Type-VVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to tally strip devices for typewriting machines and its general object is to provide improved devices of the class specified.
To the above and other ends my invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

tally strip is fed by devices which operate on the receiving roll holder to turn the same and wind the tally strip thereon, these devices being separate from the regular line spacing devices of the machine. For the purpose of insuring that the tally shall be line spaced the tally feeding devices are associated with line locking devices which are set to operate as the tally strip enters the printing field of the types. In order to unlock the line locking devices and permit the tally strip to be printed upon, it is necessary to press a key which notonly unlocks the line lock but also spaces the tally strip.
The gist of the invention lies in preventing the tally strip from being printed upon until after it has been fed or line spaced to move the previously printed item past the printing line.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form of my invention,

Key levers 4 are connected with sublevers 5 which in turn are connected by links 6 with type bars 7 adapted to strike the front face of a platen 8 mounted in a traveling platen carrier or carriage comprising end bars .9 and a connecting slide bar 10, the latter being grooved to cooperate with anti-friction balls 11 which also co-act with fixed guide rails 12. The usual spring drum by which the traveling carriage is drawn leftward is omitted from the drawings. The carriage feeding devices ma 1 be of ordinary construction comprising a toothed escapement wheel 13 with which cooperate dogs lt and 15 mounted on a pivoted dog rocker 16 which is connected by a link 17 with the central rearwardly extending arm of a universal bar frame 18 which carriesa universal bar 19 underlying the key levers. Associat-ed with the platen are the usual paper feeding devices comprising feed rolls 20 and 21 which extend along the platen but stop short of the tally strip at the right-hand end of the platen. The platen is rotatable for line spacing purposes by the usual line spacing devices comprising a ratchet wheel 22 connected to the left-hand end of the platen and operated upon by a pawl 23 ohm trolled by a lever or finger piece 24. The line locking device or trip 59 on the carriage is adapted to cooperate with a line locking device on the frame of the machine. The latter device is in the present instance a normally upright member or step 61 pivoted at 62 to the usual line locking ball 63 of the Monarch machine, said bail extending lengthwise of and in front of the lower traelrway extension above the pivot 12 and being pivoted at its ends at 64: to the ends of said trackway. A spring 65 maintains the bail normally in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Thepivoted stop member 61 is'adapted to cooperate with stop pins 66 and 67 on the bail, a spring 68 normally maintaining the member 61 against the stop 66, as shown in Fig. 2. i
The bail 63 cotiperates with a member 69 through a pin rearward from the bail and underlies a tail piece 71 of the member 69, which member is pivoted at 72 to the lower trackway 12. The member depends from its pivot and terminates at the lower end in a hook '73 which is adapted to swing under to the link 17. Normally the parts are in the'Fig. 2 position, the pin which underlies the tail, piece 71 maintaining the hook 73 disconnected from the finger 74. By dcpressing the bail 63 the pin 70 is lowered, permitting the member 69 to swing on its pivot 7 2, owing to the action of gravity and causing the hook 7 3 to engage with the finger 7d. At this time the operation of the key levers A will be prevented, owing to the fact that the universal bar 19 will be held against depression by the link 17 which in turn will be held from being lowered by the hook 73 acting on the finger 74. Thus not only will the type bars being swung up to the platen to print, but also the dog rocker 16 will be held from movement so that the escapement will be locked and the carriage prevented from advancing in letter space direction. The low-- ering of the bail and the consequent-locking of the parts, as described, is brought about in. the present instance'by the co-action o the trip 59 with the stop 61. As will be understood from Fig. 2, these parts are so disposed and arranged that the trip will be brought into ,contactive engagement with the stop 61 just before the carriage has advanced far enough to the left to bring the tally strip into the printing field or opposite the printing point, the printing point being designated by the reference character 7) in Fig. 2. lg. 2 the parts linelocking As shown in said F are positioned so that writing will take lace on the bill sheet 7 5 just to the left of the left-hand edge of the tally strip 40,. Although the carriage has been described as being arrested by the line locking stops prior to the actuation of the key 49, it will be understood that he operator need not wait to actuate the key until the carriage is arrested'and the line locked. It will be observed that the keys 49 and 77 are in proximity to each other and so disposed that they may oe opthe left of the stop (51. In a typcwriting machine andin tally strip mechanism, the combination of a traveling platen, printing instrumentalities, line spacing devices for the platen, means independent of said line spacing devices and of said platen for advancing a tally strip independently of the platen, means operative to prevent cooperation between the tally strip and the printing instrumentalities, and a single key operative toadvance the tally strip and also operative on said preventive means to enable the tally strip to be printed upon when the printing instrumentalit-ies are actuated.

In a typewriting machine and in tally strip mechanism, the combination of a platen, pawl and ratchet line feeding devices therefor, separate pawl and ratchet tally feeding devices, line locking mechanism, and a single key operative to unlock said line locking mechanism and to actuate said pawl and ratchet tally feeding devices. 8. in a typewriting machine and in tally strip mechanism, the combination of a platen, line spacing devices therefor, a line lock, a tally delivery roll, a tally receiving roll, pawl and. ratchetmechanism connected to the receiving roll and separate from the platen line spacing devices, and a key operative on said pawl and ratchet mechanism to line feed the tally strip and simultaneously operative to unlock said line lock.

In a typewriting machine and in tally strip mechanism, the combination of a platen, line spacing devices therefor, inde pendent tally feeding devices, printing instrumentalities, and means for preventing theoperation of the printinginstrumentalities on the tally strip until after the tally strip feeding devices are operated.

In a typewriting machine and in tally strip mechanism, the combination of a traveling carriage, a platen thereon, a release key on the carriage, line locking devices, and a key for unlocking the same and for simuh taneously advancing the tally strip in line spacing direction, said last named key being arranged in proximity to said release key.
