To all whom it may concern;
Be it knoftv that I, EUGENE D. CHELLXS, a citizen of S5 vUnited States, residing at Portland, county of Cumberland, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Caps for Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has to do with the eonsures intended to be used on liquid retaining receptacles to have the packing afford a close lit and leave no chance for the leakage or accim'iulation of the contents of the vessel between the cap proper and the bottle mouth. It is furthermore desirable to so arrange the cap that the delivery ofthe liquid will be made easy under all conditions and so that the flow will be uniform throughout.
To this end-fl ha e devised the subject matter of my' present invention which involves the provision of suitable means for maintaining between the closure and the vessel mouth the proper relation by which the packing will be suitably compressed and held'against displacements and changing in forni. so that under such conditions as those surrounding the pouring of the liquid from the vessetthe parts will remain with a. uniform tight fit and the contents be delivered in a rapid and uniform manner.
In the structure .avhieh I have shown and described as an enibot liment of this inventioii'l have provided a means for holdii'igthe packing in suitable position and under a suitablepressure and have provided for'the delivery of the contents in the manner desired by 'an arrangement of ports which I will now disclose. i

.70 is an annular depending compressing rib formed in the resilient metal of the plate about midway of that portion of the plate 7 which covers the surface of the bottle mouth.
The cover plate 19 has a central recess formed as a depression in the metal of the cover and located on'the under side there f.

pack 18. shown in Figs. 3 and t of the draw-- ings. The depression and the pack located within the depression are of sutlicient size to cover any opening or openings in the cap plate 7 so as to overlie the same and to be held down firmly ther con by the spring: locking lip 14 which engages the under side. of the .siolildm' 2. formed about. the mouth of the vessel. It will be seen that the location of the pa -kin this recess protects the pack 18 against dislodgmcnt by the lateral swing of the cover in case the cover be swung entirely off the plate 7. Nevertheless. when swung to cover the plate 7 the spring lock-- ing lip l twill draw it. down snugly so as to completely seal the openings in the pack. The combination of the pack in the laterally swinging cover affords furthermore a peculiar combination in that the cm er is not nor mally swung off when ii. ordinary use. but remains partly overlying the, cap, so that. the pack 18 is supported by the upper surface of the cap plate 7.
The. closure is applied to the bottle in the usual manner, by slipping it transversely upon the mouth of the bottle while the cover plate 18 is opened so that tile spring fingers I?) will engage with the shoulder l and draw the cap plate when finally positioned. over the bottle mouth down on to the same. thus bringing the depending flange H over the edge of the bottle mouth. It is obvious that the nature of the openings may be changed and openings of other types employed where other contents of a different nature are to be contained in the vessel and the structure of the annular compression rib is obviously applicable to my various closures and to the various forms of openings for access to the contents of the vessel.
\Vhat I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A closure for a containing vessel having a shoulder about its mouth comprising a cap having an opening therein, a laterally swinging cover unyieldingly pivoted to one side of said cap, said cover having a central recess formed on its inner face, a pack located in said recess" and adapted to compressibly cover said opening when said cover is in closed position and a spring locking lip on said cover and adapted to engage said shoulder when said cover is in said closed position. a
2. In combination with a vessel neck having a shoulder about its mouth, a laterally swinging cover pivoted on one side thereof and a spring locking lip on said cover on the side thereof opposite to said pivot, said cover having a recess on its under face, a pack located within said recess and adapted to cover the mouth of the vessel, said spring locking lip being adapted to compress said pack upon said vessel mouth when said cover is in closed position.
