1 I INVENTUR UNITED srAr ns PATENT OFFICE.
JUSTIN T. HURLEY, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY," ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO UNION TYPEWRITER COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A
CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
PAPER-TABLE EXTENSIBLE SUPPORT FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES, CALCULATING- MACHINES, AND OTHER SIMILARLY-EMPLOYED MACHINES.
Application filed October 5, 1910. Serial No. 585,416.
To all U./l am it M a concern:
Lle it known that I, JUSTIN T. HURLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Paper-Table Extensible Support for T \;'pc-lYriting Machines, Calculating-Mm chines. and other Similarly-Employed Machines.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for elevating and supporting the printed sheets at a suitable angle above the paper table permitting convenient inspection of the work, especially when long sheets are employed. the object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates a view to be obtained when in operating position in front of a ty icwritingmachine or calculating machine, of the cylindrical platen and the paper table (.OIDU'lOTll}; en'iployed in connection with this class of machines, and showing my invention closed with its rectangular member .i'lush with the upper surface of the paper table; Fig. 2 attords a rear View of Fig. 1, showing the extensible support in an elevated position; and Fig. 2-} illustrates one of the adjusting blocks used for supporting the horizontal rectangular member. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the support showing in dotted outline the positions assumed by the adjusting block and connected parts when disengaged from the rack serratioi'is, said block being sliovm with one of its side plates sectioned away.
Similar reference numbers refer to simi lar parts throughout the several views.
The paper table 1 accompanying the printing platen 2 has been provided with an elongated slot 3 into which is s ated a correspondingly shaped paper support 4 designed to conform with the contour of the upper surface of the paper table and when in inoperative position to form a part thereof. livotcd to the rearward or under surface of table. l and parallel therewith by the pivots 5 are the arms (3. The paper support 4 has been supplied on its under surface and parallel therewith with a web or flange strip 7,.
having the rectangular opening 8, adapted to slidahly accommodate the adjusting blocks 9, which latter are connected to the arms 6 by the pivots 10.
Specification of Letters Patent.
1 attain V Patented July 16, 1912 The upper edgeof the rectangular opening 8 has been provided with serrations 11 adapted to be engaged by the tapered projections 12 of the adjusting blocks 9, thereby retaining the support 4 adjustably at the desired degree of elevation. hen lowering the support the tapered projections 12 may be disengaged from the serrations 11 by moving the block 9 to the dotted position shown in Fig. 4. The arms (3 extend freely through the slot 3 crossing each other, and each connects with its block 9 in the opposite end of the rectangular opening 8, thereby permitting various degrees of elevation of part 4, but when the latter has been returned to its seat in slot 3 the arms (5 will be folded beneath or on the rearward side of table 1 as illustrated by the dotted outlines Fig. 2. The dog 12 and the two plates 9 can hes-secured together in any suitable manner after said dog has been inserted in the slot- 8.
I claim:
1. In a machine of the class described, ,the combination with a paper table, of an extensible paper support norn'ially flush with the upper or paper-carrying surface of the paper table and adapted through the medium of folding supporting arms to be adjust-ably elevated for bringing the paper to a convenient angle for inspection.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a paper table, of an extensible paper support, a slot longitudinally in the paper table adapted to nornmlly seat the extensible support, arms pivoted to the rearward or under side of the paper table and adapted to be swung upwardly through the paper table slot, a horizontally disposed paper support normally seated in the paper table slot and adapted to be elevated to various positions by the pivoted arms, means operated by the pivoted arms for raising and lowering the horizontally disposed paper support, and means for retaining the said horizontal support in adjusted positions above the paper table.
3. The combination with a. paper table such are used. on typewriting machines, of an extensible paper support, pivoted folding arms ft atraisingand lowering the extensible support,'a web or flange attached longitudinally on the under side of the support, a rectangular opening longitudinally in the flange, adjusting blocks slidably arranged on the Web or flange and in the rectangular opening thereof, a plvotineach block adapt- ,ed to connect the folding arms operatively with the blocks, and means for retaining the blocks in adjustedpositions in the rectangular flange opening.
at. The combination with a paper table, of a rectangular longitudinal slot therein, an extensible paper support adapted to be nor mally seated in the rectangular. slot and flush with the upper surface of the table, folding arms pivoted to the rearward side of the table adapted to be swung upwardly through the rectangular slot for the purpose of operating the extensible support, a horizontal flange, an opening longitudinally therein, adjusting blocks adapted to be slidably operated on the flange and in the longitudinal opening thereof, the folding arms pivotally secured to the adjusting blocks, serrations upon the inner or slot edge of the horizontal flange, tapered projections upon the adjusting blocks adapted to engage in the serrations thereby retaining the extensible support in adjusted position.
5. The combination in an extensible paper support adapted for use in association with a Writing machine paper table, of means permitting the extensible support to be moved normally and inoperatively into and flush with the upper surface of the paper table, pivoted arms normally folded beneath the paper table but adapted to be raised through the paper table slot thereby elevating the extensible support to the desired height, a horizontal support for the paper, the folding arms pivotally connecting therewith, and means for adjustably retaining the horizontal support at desired elevations.
