GEORGE B. JACKSON, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
KNIFE-SHARPENING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1912.
Application filed November 15, 1910. Serial No. 592,523.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife- Sharpening Devices; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in knife sharpening devices and more particularly to a device of this character' which is adapted to be detachably secured to the edge of a table, bench or the like and which is intended primarily for domestic use, and my object is to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will comprise two sets of sharpening elements adapted to be used consecutively.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts and details as is hereinafter more fully described, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and shown in the accompanying` drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In these drawings which are attached to and form a part of this application, Figure l is a front elevation of the device attached to a table edge or the like, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same and showing a knife in position to be operated upon, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device, and Fig. l is a detail elevation of one of the cutters. l
Referring more specifically to these views in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, l indicates in general the body of the device which is preferably a metal casting comprising an upper cutter holder 2, a depending portion 3 and an inwardly extending lug 4 formed at the end of the depending portion, said lug having a tapped aperture in which is threaded the thumb screw 5.
Referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the body portion may be secured to a table edge or the like, here designated as 6, by inserting the same into the seat formed between the members 2 and t and then setting up the clamp screw A pair of V- shaped apertures 7 and 8 are formed in the upper portion of the body member l and as seen in Fig. 3 these apertures have offset leg portions. Seated within said leg portions and secured therein by means of small clamp screws 9 are the sharpening elements l0.
As seen in Fig. 4 each sharpening element comprises a rectangular piece of hardened tool steel in which are cutat a slight angle to the horizontal fine teeth, here designated as 1l, giving to each cutting element somewhat the appearance of a single cut file. When in place in the body portion, the cutting elements are as above stated secured within the V-shaped channels and inclined at an acute angle with each other. One set or pair of cutting elements has finer teeth than the other.
ln using the apparatus a knife, conventionally illustrated at l2, is introduced into the crotch of the coarser pair of cutting ele ments, and on moving the knife forward it will be seen that the lower edge thereof will be cut or sharpened by the teeth of the cutting elements. In order to quickly produce an edge on a comparatively dull knife it is necessary to provide comparatively coarse teeth in the cutting elementsaind these teeth are unsuitable for producing the finer cutting edge of the knife. l therefore provide the second set of finer toothed cutting elements and it will be seen by using the two consecutively a dull knife may quickly be reduced to a sharp edge. If the teeth on one face of the cutting elements wear ott, the elements may be removed by loosening the setscrews 9 and turned to expose a new face, and it will be seen that the life of the apparatus as a Whole is practically unlimited since the cutting elements are the only Wearing parts and these may be readily replaced.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the class described, a body portion having a V-shaped aperture therein, oli-set seats formed in the Walls of said aperture, file-toothed cutting'elements slidable in said seats,'1neans for securing said elements in adjusted position, said means be- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D.
