Abstract

In accordance with one embodiment a blade sharpener comprises a rectangular body having channels, slots, and blade sharpening surfaces. The blade sharpener is mountable in a variety of positions and on a variety of planar surfaces.

Description

    FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention relates to a blade sharpener and, more particularly, to a blade sharpener that is used manually.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • Mountable blade sharpeners do not provide a means for mounting the sharpener in a variety of positions or locations. Blade sharpeners do not have a means for preventing blades from becoming dull after the blades are sharpened. Hand held and counter top manual blade sharpeners do not provide secure work surfaces for blade sharpening. Hand held blade sharpeners are difficult to hold steady making precision sharpening of a blade difficult. A user must focus both on holding the sharpener and blade at correct angles to sharpen the blade properly. A user may be cut due to the close proximity of the moving blade to his or her hand gripping the handle of the sharpener.
  • U.S. Pat. No. 4,872,378, issued to Wrench, discloses a holder for knife sharpener that fits over a partially opened cabinet drawer.
  • The aforementioned patent does not teach the use of a sharpener that is mountable to a variety of planar surfaces or in a variety of positions. It also does not teach a mounted sharpener that is alternatively used in a person's hands. This patent also does not teach a sharpener that when mounted to the inside of a drawer, the draw is closable. The '378 patent does not teach a sharpener that stores knives or blades of various sizes.
  • Advantages: Accordingly several advantages of one or more aspects are as follows: to provide a blade sharpener that can be securely mounted to a variety of planar surfaces, that is relatively inexpensive, that can be used to sharpen a variety of types of blades, that has blade slots 22 for organizing a variety of knives or blades, and is mountable in a variety of positions on planar surfaces of varied thicknesses.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • In accordance with one embodiment a blade sharpener comprises a rectangular body having multiple mounting channels, multiple blade slots 22, and multiple blade sharpening surfaces.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • A complete understanding of the present invention may be obtained by reference to the accompanying drawings, when considered in conjunction with the subsequent, detailed description, in which:
  • FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a blade sharpener 100.
  • FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a blade sharpener 100 with two knives slidingly stored in blade slots 22.
  • FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a blade sharpener 100 mounting channel 10 mounted on a vertical surface.
  • FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a blade sharpener 100 mounting channel 14 mounted on edge of a vertical surface.
  • FIG. 5 is a perspective view of a blade sharpener 100 mounting channel 14 mounted on edge of a horizontal surface.
  • For purposes of clarity and brevity, like elements and components will bear the same designations and numbering throughout the FIGURES.
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE BLADE SHARPENER
  • FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a blade sharpener 100.
  • FIG. 2 is a perspective view of blade sharpener 100 with two knives 24 inserted in blade slots 22.
  • FIG. 3 is a perspective view of blade sharpener 100 mounted on vertical planar surface 28 with knife 24 on sharpening surfaces 16.
  • FIG. 4 is a perspective view of blade sharpener 100 mounted on vertical planar surface 28 with knife 24 on sharpening surfaces 16.
  • FIG. 5 is a perspective view of blade sharpener 100 mounted on horizontal planar surface 30.
  • The blade sharpener 100 is mountable on the edges of a variety planar surfaces in a variety of positions including but not limited to vertical planar surface 26, or vertical planar surface 28, or horizontal planar surface 30 as shown in FIGS. 3, 4, and 5 respectively. The variety of mounting channels allows the user to choose a comfortable and ergonomic position in which to use the blade sharpener 100.
  • The blade sharpener 100 mounts on the edges of planar surfaces of varied thicknesses using channels of varied widths. FIG. 1 shows mounting channel 10, mounting channel 12, and mounting channel 14. These channels mount to a variety of thicknesses of planar surfaces, as each channel does not have the same sized width.
  • In another embodiment of the invention adhesively or mechanically secured padded surfaces or shims can also be added to channels to vary widths of channels in order to accommodate mounting the blade sharpener 100 securely on planar surfaces of varying thicknesses.
  • In another embodiment of the invention a set screw with a manually turnable knob (not shown) may be used to secure the blade sharpener 100 to a planar surface.
  • FIG. 1 shows sharpening surfaces 16, 18, 20, and 90. Sharpening surfaces 16 sharpens blades with smooth edges. Sharpening surfaces 18 sharpens blades with serrated edges. Sharpening surfaces 20 sharpens ceramic blades. A fourth sharpening surfaces 90 may be a blade sharpener or blade cleaner. Sharpening surfaces that sharpen other types of blades may be used. The sharpening surfaces may be made of ceramic, porcelain, stone, industrial diamond, or other materials.
  • FIG. 2 shows two knives 24 inserted into the blade sharpener 100 blade slots 22. The blade sharpener 100 blade slots 22 accommodate more than two blades. FIG. 2 has only two knife blades inserted in two blade slots 22 for clearer illustration. The blade slots 22 store knives 24 or other bladed tools in the blade sharpener 100 while the blade sharpener 100 is mounted to a vertical planar surface, such as but not limited to the inside of a drawer.
  • The blade sharpener 100 may also be used when not mounted to a planar surface. A user may grip the thinner edge of mounting channel 10 in one hand and hold the blade to be sharpened in the other hand. Mounting channel 10 protects the fingers of a person using the blade sharpener 100.
  • The blade sharpener 100 may be temporarily stored on a metal surface by used of embedded permanent magnets. The blade sharpener 100 may also be stored in a closed drawer while mounted to the side of the drawer. The blade sharpener 100 is designed to clear the moving parts of the drawer and cabinet surfaces. The blade sharpener 100 can store knives 24 or other flat tools in a drawer or other space.
  • Since other modifications and changes varied to fit particular operating requirements and environments will be apparent to those skilled in the art, the invention is not considered limited to the example chosen for purposes of disclosure, and covers all changes and modifications which do not constitute departures from the true spirit and scope of this invention.
  • Having thus described the invention, what is desired to be protected by Letters Patent is presented in the subsequently appended claims.
