-The Schedule referred to in these Lettere` Patent 4and making part of the seme.
"To all Inkom t may concerner.
Be it known that I, HENRY W1LLsoN,'of Hertford county, England, non' a resident of Chicago, Illinois, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in` Embossing Device; and
l t I do hereby declarethatjthe following is-a full, clear,
.and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings-making .partof this specfcation, andto the letters of reference markedthere on, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur. t
Toenableothers skilled iu -the art to construct and l use `my invention, I will proceed 'to describe it. Figure 1 isi the side elevation, and,
Figure 2 is the `top planof the device. Figure 3represents a tympan-sheet and-thedevice "aftixed.. i
Tlie `object of fury invention consists in an embossing device, soarrzmgedand attached to. -or connected with the bed, or anyother `part of an ordinary printing-press, in sucha'manner asto prodncethe embossling andthe printing operationsimultaneously.
`I will `describe the devices used, and the modeof operation for e lars or cards, and einbossingthe said circulars at the sameoperation. I The type'forv the heading or card i's set and locked up inthe ordinary manner.`
` The bed A of thcwpx'ess is covered with atympan# isheet in .the usual way, and then the embossing de- H vice is afliXed.
This. device consists o'f-a.` metallic plate, B, conor otherwise, with platel "B',"and bearing atfthe other end the die b, opposite `-\vhich, at theendandto the plate B', the counter-die b'isaffixedu"v i Sheet metal fork C can be attached, if desirable, to
the lower part ofthe rear endof the device, for the f' `purposeof betteraiixing the said devicet'othe tymL pan-sheet. i
. An India-rubber or otherelastic cnshon,`F, is affixed onto the endjof the plate B, and covered with a i metallic cap, for the purpose of qualizing the pressure on the die, and a coil spring, I), isplaced between the plates. i,
The operation consistsinthis': `that after the tympan-sheet is arranged,1and the plate for the sheets or cards to be printed is marked cuit by pins, the botl- `tom plate Bzof the device is pasted over underneath, tympan-sheet, and pressed` down and adjusted so as toV i the paste and the i fork thus 'holdingfthe devicelin place.
.i Then the sheet of paperor card to be printed and the fork O4 is introduced `into the have the `die b ini` proper position,
printing i the t headings of paper 'circul ,embosscdis placed on the bedA in such a manner as to have that part which4 is to be embossed between the die and the counter. ,The press is set in operation, and every time the chase comes down on the plate, the quoins, or some other piece of furniture substitutediu place of the quoins, presses down `the plate paper or card, while the type `B and embosses thc printsthe same.
The saine result can be obtained by having the vplates B B stationary, and by atlixing in a proper slot in the plate B a movable die, in the shape of a plunger', held in place by a spring, and its `counter- -plate aiiixed to the lower plate B'.
As also the same may be accomplished by a simple l die aii'ixed to a metallic strip of suitable length, the other cud of the strip or plate being" firmly secured` to the nipper-bar ofthe press, so that when the chase comes down and the nipper-bar revolves, thedie comes .dow'n on the Iproperplace of the paper or card, and
embosses the same. i
` .All the above devices, when attached to a printingpress, accomplish the same objeot',;that is, they emboss the paper or card attire same time when they are printed with type, but for simplicity and effectiveness I prefer the iirst1 device above described.
When it is desirable to emboss a border around a` 4'cardor some design, `the plate B or the dieand plate B', are accordingly extended, and are provided with .two or 'more forks as O, if desirable, for the purpose of aiixing the device tothe tympan-sheet, and corresponding to the shape of the die, a. frame or plate surrounding the type locked up in a chase, so as to come down exactly on theembossing-die, and press it down on the paper or card.
Having thus described my invention, I hereby state that the device herein described `may be arranged in detail in many ways, all of which itis impossible to describe, but the principal object of the invention vbeing to embos's and to print with-type simultaneously,- while at present both operations are performed separately. f
I thereforeclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent' V i The embossing device arranged in the manner here in described, or in any other similar and suitable manner, when affixed to tympan-sheet, Dipper-bar, or any other part ofthe printing-press, in such a maii- Iier. as to produce theembo'ssing and the printing with `type operation simultaneously, sbstantiallyas herein set forth.
