To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. VVALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Masten, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention is an improved picture hanger by means of which a picture may be readily hung at any desired angle with respect to the wall, and may be readily taken down, dusted and replaced when desired, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is extremely cheap and simple,is very stron and durable, may be readily attached to and removed from a picture frame or other like object, and which may be readily suspended from a nail in the wall in order to hold the picture, and which is moreover adapted to be adjusted so as to dispose the picture at any desired pitch or inclination, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a picture hanger constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same attached to the rear side of a picture frame. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and l are detail horizontal sectional views respectively on the planes indicated by the lines b-Z and 0-0 of Fig. 1.

In the embodiment of the invention here shown, each member of the hanger bar is made of a single piece of wire of suitable length and gage. The wire which forms the upper member 2, is doubled to forman attaching eye l, and a pair of substantially arallel downwardly extending arms 5. Each of the said arms is doubled at a point a suitable distance from its upper end to form an outwardly extending eye 6, and each arm is also'provided at its lower end with an eye 7. The eyes 6 are oppositely inclined at angles of about forty-five degrees to the plane of the portions 2.

tions of the wire are twisted together at 10 to close the lower end of the said slot, the ends of the. wire being bent outwardly and downwardly as at 11, and provided with devices 12 to engage the under side of the picture frame. The terminal devices 12 are here shown as provided with knobs 13 to bear under the frame.

The sides of the arm 8 of the lower bar member lie in a common plane, which is at right angles to that of the sides or arms 5, of the upper bar member 2, so that the slotted arm 8 of the lower member can be fitted in the space between the arms 5 of the upper member. A bolt or other suitable connecting device 14, passes through the eyes 7, and through the slots 9, and serves to adjustably connect the two members of the bar together, and have sliding movement to enable the said bar to be adjusted longitudinally. When the bar is disposed at any desired adjustment, the nut 15 of the bolt is tightened so as to secure the members of the bar together, at the required adjustment. The upper-end or bight of the member 3 which operates in the slot or space between the arms 5 of the upper member, is provided with notches 16, in opposite sides, which notches are engaged by the arms 5, and hence while the members 2 and 3, are connected together, for adjustment longitudinally, they are prevented from turning angularly, and hence are kept in line with each other, the bolt 14 not only clamping the lower portions of the arms 5 to opposite sides of the arm 8 of the lower member, but also keeping the said arms 5 in engagement with the said guide notches 16. Any suitable devices may be employed if preferred in lieu of the knob 13.

In connection with the bar 1, I also provide a pair of connecting rods 17 each of which is provided with hooks at its ends. The hooks at the inner ends of the connecting rods are engaged with the eyes 6 and those at the outer ends of the connecting rods are engaged with suitable screw eyes 18, attached to the rear side of the frame at suitable points.

It will be understood from the foregoing and by reference to the drawings, that the hanger bar engages the lower side of the picture frame at points near its center, and that the connecting rods connect the end portions of the frame to the hanger rod, at a point near the upper end of the latter,

and hence when the hanger has been thus attached to the frame, the picture or other device may be hung by merely engaging the eye 4 with a nail or the like device on the wall. Hence the hanger supports the picture frame and by lengthening or shortening the hanger bar, which may be done by adjusting the bolt 14L in the slot 9, and correspondingly moving the upper member 2 with respect to the lower member 3, the picture frame may be disposed at any desired angle or pitch.

In order to take down the frame at any time, it is only necessary to detach the eye 4 from the handle or other supporting object. Hence it requires only an instant to take down a picture provided with my im proved hanger, dust the same, and rehang it. Moreover, my improved hanger does not deface the wall or the frame of the picture, and it will be understood that it may be applied to the back of a picture very ex peditiously and with little or no trouble.

downwardly a single piece of wire, said upper member i having a pair of arms spaced apart and provided at their lower ends with eyes, said upper member being also provided, at its upper end, with an attaching device; said lower member having a twisted portion, diverging frame engaging members below said twisted portion and a slotted arm above said twisted portion, the bight at the upper end of said slotted arm being provided with notches in opposite sides engaged by the arms of the upper member and a bolt operating in the slot of said slotted arm, engaging the eyes of the arms of the upper member, clamping the lower portions of said arms to opposite sides of the arm of the lower member and also :eeping said arms in engagement with the said notches and connecting rods attached to theupper member and adapted to be attached to the ends of the picture frame.
