Specification of Letters Patent. B-gptented July 16,1912. Application filed'fl'ovember 25, 1911, Serial lIo. 662,503
ful Loss-Preventing Device, of which the,
following is a specification.
It isjone of the objects of thepresent invention. to I provide a structure in; which a pencil-holding member is mounted forrqta tion and for free pivotal movement, upona garment-engaging clip, wherebyithe pencil-- which the holder carries, will stand verti cally at all times, the construction being such that the-device may be assembled with the upper edge of a pocket, or with a suspender, or other vertical supporting elesisting ment.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pencil-holder including grips of novel and improved form.
'With'-the forego1ng and other objects view, which will appear as the description proceeds, theinvention resides in the com-' ination and'arrangement of parts and m the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the preclse embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be' made within the scope of what is claimed without de- I parting from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings,- Figure 1 shows one form of the invention, mounted in place upon the pocket of a garment; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the structure shown in Fig. 1, the garment-engaging member, however, being alined with the clip. '45
pencil-holding member; Fig.- 3 is a side elevation showing a modified form of the iii-- vention, Fig. at is a side elevation showing a still. further modification; and Fig. 5. is
a detail perspective of oneend of one of the lever members of the garment-engaging In carrying out the invention there 1 provided a garment-engaging clip, denoted o hecme her 2 p50.- ..nated as the secondary, lever. The levers 2 generally by'the numeral 1, the clip 1 commary lever, and the lever 31 being desigand 3 flare, at one end, to form finger-grips 1, the other ends of the levers being recmn ularly disposed, 'to form cooperating,

The lever members Q'and 3 are equipped with rectangularly disposed ears 7 through which is passed a pivot pin 8, there being a spring 9 coiled about the pin 8, the ends 10 ofithespring 9engaging the lever members Zrand '3, "to' holdthe jaws 5;.thereof in. en-

14 and 17 mayhave pivotal movement with respect to the garment-engagingclip 1.
If desired, the garment-engaging clip 1 may be engaged, as shown in.- Fig.-1, wit the upper edge of a pocket of a garment. -Under such circumstances, the clip 1 stands at right anglesto. the holders 14 land 1'1. However, if desired-the clip 1 maybe positioned arallelto-the holders M and 17 as showman Fig. 2, under which circumstances the device may be assembled witha sue ponder, or other .verticallypoiz tionedsupporting element. Owing to the fact that the holders 17 and-1 1 arepivotally connected with the clip 1,'the pencils "which are-held stand in vertical positions.

The plate the construction being such that the holders Within the grips 16 and 19-will at. all times I boss 11, --theholder 14 Will be older limsy turn readily upon '1 the pivot member 12, without coming into extensive frictional contact with the primary lever member 2.'
-If desired, as shown in Fig, 3, the holder 22 may be made somewhat shorter than the holder 14, the holder 22 comprising, as before, a plate 23, the ends of which are curved inwardly, to form resilient, pencilholding grips 24, A single, arcuategrip 25 may be ivotally mounted, in the manner hereinbe ore described, between the grips 24.
As shown in Fig. 4, the holder 26 may v consist of a plate 27, the ends of which are turned inwardly, grips 28. v
The constructlon' of the device, generally to form the pencil-holding oils from one to four may be carried in the device. Moreover, owing to the fact that the pencil-holders are Divotallyconnected with the garment-engaging clip, the pencils whichthe holders carrywill, at all times,--
stand vertically positioned, irrespective of both whether the garment engagingclip is, itself, vertically or, horizontally connected with the garment.
Having thus described the invention, what 7 vided with an outstanding boss; superposed plates, one of which rests against the boss,
the plates being curved to' form resilient, pencil-engaging grips; and a securing memher extended through theand through between the In testimony that I. claim the foregoing ture in the presence of two witnesses.
