1 Claim.

This invention relates generally to an umbrella carrier for use by persons whose hands are occupied in carrying other articles, and specifically to an umbrella carrier which attaches to a mailbag.

An object of this invention is to provide a carrier for an umbrella that is of light weight and sturdy construction for use by mailmen and others whose burdens are such that excessive weight in such a carrier is to be avoided.

A further object of this invention is to provide' a carrier for an umbrella that is readily clipped or temporarily attached to a mailbag or other article slung over the shoulder, and is readily and easily secured thereon with a minimum of displacing other contents of the mailbag.

Another object is to provide a carrier for an umbrella that is quickly and easily attached to the mailbag used by mailmen without defacing or marring the surface of the mailbag.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description of the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing:

Figure 1 is a representation of a person carrying a bag slung over the shoulder by straps, with a perspective view of the invention attached thereto.

Figure 2 is a front view in elevation of the invention.

Figure 3 is a side View in elevation of the invention, and

Figure 4 is a top view of the invention.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, in Figures 1, 2, and 3, the umbrella handle Ill is shown (Figure 1) inserted in the spring clips I I-and I2. These spring clips II and I2 are of suitable size, and not necessarily the same size, to encompass the handle portion of an umbrella and are characterized by having a fiat portion Ila and I2a and inwardly curved ends I Ib and I2b. Spring clips II and I2 are secured on their fiat portions to a plate I3 by a bolt and nut assembly I4 traversing 'hole I la in each of the clips.

Spring clamp I5 is shown pivotally attached by means of pin I6, to outstanding clips H which are formed by suitably punching the plate I3 as shown. In Figure 4 it will be seen that spring clamp I5 has coil spring I9 wound in such a manner as to press the spring clamp I5 against the board I3 so as to secure the board to anything placed between the board and spring clamp.

In Figure 1 is shown the manner in which the spring clamp I5 engages the side of the mailba 20 and holds erect by means of the clips II and I2 the umbrella 2|, leaving the persons hands free of the necessity of holding the umbrella erect. When the umbrella is not carried in upright position; the holder is clamped on the outside edge of the mailbag 20. By rotating the spring clips I I and I2 one-quarter turn the folded umbrella may be carried in downward position.

It is to be understood that various modifications and changes may be made in this invention Without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, as set forth in the appended claim.

What is claimed is:

A unitary umbrella holding attachment for mail carriers bags and the like, comprising a unitary flat p1ate,-a pinch clamp device secured to the plate adjacent to one side of the same, a spring to bias the pinch clamp device into clamping engagement with the plate, the pinch clamp device being operable to receive a portion of the bag between it and the plate for detachably securing the plate to the bag, a first generally U- shaped resilient clip secured to the side of the plate remote from the pinch clamp device and including spaced opposed upstanding resilient arms adapted to receive between them and releasably hold a portion of the umbrella handle, and a second generally U-shaped resilient clip secured to the side of the plate having the first 7 clip and spaced from the first clip, the second clip being disposed substantially at right angles to the first clip and including spaced opposed upstanding resilient arms adapted to receive and releasably hold a portion of the umbrella handle which extends at right angles to the portion held by the first clip.
