Description

' 25 time,

long` periods as is il? "fr ALBERT L. CROWSON, OF ARCDIA, LOUISIANA.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
specification of Letters raient.
Patented Jury ic, iena.
Application filed February 20, 1912. Serial No. 678,900.
To all who-m it may concern:
elle it known that I, ALBERT L. CRowsoN, facitizen of the United States, residing at LArcadia, parish of Bienville, and State of 5. Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a spec-ification.
This invention relates to temporary bind.-
The records of courts, in law and equity causes, accumulate rapidly and have to be kept in such condition that any particular pleading, deposition, or other paper is read- 5 ily available at any time and the entire record kept in orderly fashion so that the progress of the causeor causes can be followed from time to time, this being particularly true wherelitigation is pending for frequently the case. It
is also necessary to keep court records so that the clerk may readily make up an accurate transcript for purposes of appeal.
there an action or cause is pending a long the record usuallyl becomes volumi nous and the ordinary files or binder, iile jackets, etc., prove inadequate, requiring repeated adjustment much loss of time and inconvenience as the ordinary files are inadequate because they ticularly court and have only a limited capacity. 1
My object is to provide a temporary fiat iile or binder for papers of any character which are added to from time to time, parattorney records, which will have practically unlimited capacity for expansion so that no matter how voluminous the record becomes, succeeding papers ma be added thereto from time to time without disturbing the orderly arrangement pleadings,
of those previously filed and facilitating easy 'and quick access to all papers.
The invention also contemplates the provision of a flat file or binder-by which the depositions, exhibits, etc., of an action or cause will be bound together in their order of filing so that ,the making up of the transcript, if appeal is taken, is facilitated.
The invention contemplates the provision of a lilo or binder having covers which are independent of each other and. provided with infolded, reinforced, parts for the ad- A justifient, by fasteners of any desired size, r of the papers, in their proper order and by which the order of filing of the papers,
of the papers and.
particularly in a live action or cause may be maintained, tion ofpapers from time to time.
My file or binder is radically distinguished from those heretofore known tothe art in that the covers are independent or separate so 'that their capacity for expansion or separation for the accommodation vof additional papers is' not limited in any manner, asis the case with those files or binders where the `covers are connected logether even'though such connection he an expansible one. My file Aor binder further distinguished from those by the infolding of parts of the cover and the reinforcement thereof in a new manner so that they are adapted to withstand repeated bendings or foldings from use, and I employ fasteners connectingr these infolded parts and passing through the papers which are held between them. I preferably employ fasteners of the well known McGill type but l do not restrict myself to their use. I may so arrange the fasteners that they are permanently carried by one of the infolded parts of a cover or are separable therefrom.
One embodiment of the invention is set forth fully hereinafter and the novel features of the invention are recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure l is a perspective of the present invention, the papers and covers being broken away and one of the covers being turned back to show how the papers are disposed between the covers; Fig. 2, a vertical section, broken away, showing fasteners permanently carried by one of the infolded parts of a cover;
Fig. 3, a similar view showing fasteners;
which are detachable; Fig. Ll, a longitudinal section of the tile showing the pern'lanently carried fasteners illustrated in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5, a similar view of a part of the lilo where the fasteners are detachable, as shown in Fig.
T he front and rear eo vers or parts of the file are shown at l and 2 and thc papers are held by the file, at 3, such papers consti.
tuting no part of the file itself but are se cured to the infolded parts l and 2 by fasteners a. i
rlhe covers l and 2 may be of any suitable material, preferably paper of suitable texture and strength to withstand usage to which [iles are s'dbjectcd.
with adaptation for addirelatively sti lf Manila' are preferably of some suitably tough but' flexible material, such as fabr1c,buckr am,`
The upp er ends of parts of the covers 1 and 2 are infolded for their entire" width, as shown at 5 and 6. O11 the outside and inside of the ends of the covers 1 and 2 there are pasted reinforcing ,st- rips 7 and 8 which or other material which has the requisite properties to resist fracture or splittingv due to the continued use to which a file is-'sub jected and the bendin back and forth of the covers. Preferably these reinforcing strips are provided on both the outside Aand the inside of the covers and thel infolded parts 5 and 6 thereof. The covers 1 and 2 are 'independent of and disconnected from each 'other' so that they may be readily separated or taken apart for insertion of the papers 3 to any desired extent or thickness thereof, or the removal ofany or all of said papers which constitute the pleadings, depositions, exhibits, etc., of an action or cause. If the le is used for the maintenance and preservation of court records, suitable fasteners or fastening devices may be employed for connecting the infolded parts 5 and 6 to the papers 3, but I preferably employ fasteners 4 of the well known McGill type. Alas- 1 teners of this character are adaptable in va-v rious sizes and lengths, the largest kind being quite long so that a very large number vofthe papers 3 can be accommodated and it will b e understood that there is no limit i to the expansion of the covers 1 and 2, such expansion being limited only by the end of the fastener employed for connecting the infolded parts 5 and 6 to' the papers 3. The
fasteners 4 may be permanently carried by one of the infolded parts, say that designated by 5, as Ashown 1n Fig. 2, by having a part 0f the reinforcing fabric 'or strip 8 passed over the head of the fastener which 1s also clear from Fig 4. The fasteners 4 lmay be detachable as lshown in Fig. 5, in
which event the fabric or other reinforcing strip 8 is not madey to cover the heads of the fasteners. I
The usefulness of the presentinvention i extends beyond the accumulation of papers during the progress of a legal proceeding as when the caseA is concluded, the papers may be filedaway in their order, permfa-V nently'attached together, ready 'for future reference without liability of any-of themv vbecoming detached and misplaced.
lar matter, as with voluminous correspondbinder, being expansible to any desired extent, aifords a, current binder stitutes a permanent report' of the entire matter.
.various modifications can be resorted to in carrying out the invention without departing from its spirit and scope. Having thus I claim as new and desire ters Patent,` is:
1. A file orl binder lhaving independent and separate covers each provided with an toa part of the respective covers where said ing means for connect-ing ,the reinforced heldzby the file. 2. A' file or binder .having independent infolded part, flexible reinforcing strips 'a the respective covers where said infolded adapted to clamp the papers infolded parts in a detachable manner.-
In testimony whereof, I'hereunto aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
