IMROVEMENT IN BASE-HOLDERS.

The Schedule refexred to in these Letteg Patent and making part of the ,saunel Haven, in t-h'e county oi' New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in iSash-Locks; and l do hereby declare the following,

My inventionl relates to a sash-lock, so arranged as ito be held to allow the application of both `hands to "the raising of the sash. Sash-locks havebeen before constructed in which a Ihooli or holder was so vpivote-d in the sash as to fall, iby its own gravity, into a notch in the casing, and cornbi-ned with a lever pivoted to the hook, by means of which lever the hook is forced back to ii'ee the sash, r `the lever being constructed so as toeatch `upon a projection or notch upon the sash to hold the hooli'raised .away from its notches, so that both handsmayl be 1applied to the sash.

Myimprovement' consists in pivotingthe hook or :holder in the casing and making the notches, and lalso theprqiection which holds the levernpon the lsash, s o that the raising of the sash automatically relleases the lever and allows the hook to fall, while, in the old form, -where the' hook and lever-catch are both Font-he sash, the, lever must be released by hand. C, a hook or lever, constructed with a projection, a, and pivoted in the frame at d, so that, by its own gravity, the'hook will swingforward to carry the projection a intoa notch in the sash.

' *D is a lever, pivoted to'the hook at f, by means ot' which the hook is thrown back from tlife sash, as (lenoted in broken lines, and the lever is provided with a notch, n, so that when pressed back to throw the hook from the sash, as denoted in broken lines, the

said notch will catch np'on a pin, s, on the sash,as denoted in broken lines, and thus hold the hook away from the sash.

Heldin this position, both hands may be applied to the sash, and, when the sash is raised so far as to clear the pin s from the notch InJ in the lever, t-hen the hook will ret-urn against the sash, and t-he projection enter the iii-st notch which presents itself'.

It will be evident that other devices than the pin s and notch'n may be provided to hold the lever, but this I believe to be the best practical mea-ns of so doing.

I claiin as my invention vThe hookO, constructed and pivotcd in the casing as described, and combined with the lever D, pivoted Vto the hook, and the pin or projection s on the sash,

to catch the lever D, so that the raising of the sash trips the lever, in the manner set tin-th.
