JACOB KWIA'I'KOWSKI, OF WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF 'IO JOHN THOMAS, ONE-FOURTH 'IO JOSEPH HINK, AND ONE-FOURTH TO LAW- RENGE HINK, ALL OF WINNIPEG, CANADA.
HATPI1\T PROTECTOR.
Application filed November 23, 1911.
To all whom 2'25 may concern Be it known that I, JACOB Kwm'rxowsxr,
; of the city of Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Protectors, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to a device for inclosing the piercing end or point of a hat pin, and the object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive, durable and easily attached protector which will be serviceable as well as pleasing to the eye when in use.
It consists essentially in a body piece formed from two hinged sections grooved to receive the point of the pin, a spring holding the sections normally closed and ornamenting members secured to the body piece, the parts being arranged and constructed as hereinafter more particularly described.
Figure 1 represents a side view of the pin showing the fastener applied thereon. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the body of the fastener with the wings removed. Fig. 3
is a vertical sectional view centrally through the same showing it in the closed position, and Fig. 4. is a sectional View similar to Fig. 3 but in the open position.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
1 represents the shank of a hat pin provided with a head 2 and the piercing point 3.
4; represents my protector which comprises a body piece 5 formed from two similar sections 6 and 7 each carrying a pair of lugs 8 which receive a small rod 9, the rod holding the sections hingedly together.-
A spring 10 is placed on the rod and has the ends 11 and 12 extending in opposite directions and bearing on the sect-ions of the body piece, holding them normally closed. The body sections are grooved out at 13 to receive snugly the piercing end of the pin, and I desire to make the bodies of the protector from material which will present a good gripping face so that when the protector is once applied it will hold securely.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1912.
Serial No. 661,891.
In order to make the protector more pleasing to the eye I have fitted it in the present instance in the form of a butterfly supplying wings 14 and 15, feet 16, eyes 17, and antennae 18, the feet and antennae being made from any light and serviceable material. The wings are used to catch the fastener when it is being applied on the pin. One only needs to press the tips of the wings together to open the body so that the protector can be applied on the pin with the piercing end within the grooves. Upon releasing the wings the pin is grasped between the sect-ions of the body. I do not wish to limit myself to the precise manner in which the body has been adorned in the present case, as many different ideas could be readily suggested and used to equal advantage provided it embodies some means, such as the wings, whereby the body sections can be easily opened by the application of finger pressure.
What I claim as my invention is:
A protector for the piercing ends of pins and the like comprising, a body portion formed from similar solid elongated sections supplied with extended lugs and having the body portions of the adjacent faces grooved out to receive the end of the pin, said grooves extending longitudinally and terminating a short distance from one end of the body portion forming a pocket, a small rod passing through the lugs and securing the sections hingedly together, a spiral spring inserted on the rod and having the ends extending and engaging with the respective sect-ions, and a fanciful means for adorning the protector, such means comprising wings extending from the respective sections, forming means for opening said sections as and for the purpose specified. a
Signed at Winnipeg, this 24th day of October 1911.
