RACK FOR PAPER BAGS.
Specification of Letters'Patent.
Application filed May 31, 1911. Serial No. 630,312.
To all wlwm it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES JACOB TABER, a, citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bainbridge, in the county of Chenango and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Rack for Paper Bags, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to store furniture, and its object is to provide a new and imroved rack or holder for holding paper ags of various sizes and in a manner for convenient removal of bags singly of a desired size as required by the Storekeeper, and arranged to permit of placing the rack in a flat, inclined, or a vertical position on a counter or other support, and to allow of filling each individual holder with a bundle of bags of a size corresponding to the holder.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a series of connected holders of approximately V shape in cross section and of different lengths and depths for the reception of bundles of .paper bags of corresponding sizes, spring-pressed arms engaging the uppermost bag in a holder, and spring guards extending from the front edges of the bags in the holders. A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rack filled with paper bags; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional perspective view of part of the rack; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged section of one of the adjustable brackets for the brace of the leg employed for holding the rack in an inclined position, the section being on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
On the frame A are mounted a series of holders or pockets B, approximately V shape in cross section and of diflerent depths and lengths to accommodate paper bags C- of corresponding sizes, it being understood that on account of the V shaped form of a holder a bundle or a bunch of bags C placed in the holder and resting againstone member B thereof, assumes a step form owing to the inner edges of the bags abutting against the other member B of the corresponding holder B. Thus the bags 0 in step form in a holder B can be readily removed one by one without dange r of pulling out two bags at a time, it being understood that the bags are removed singly from the top of a bundle. pressed arm D engages with its free end the uppermost bag of a bundle of bags in a holder B, and this arm D is fulcrumed on a cross bar E arranged in the bottom edge of a holder B and serving to reinforce the same, and in front of the front edges of each bundle of bags C in a holder B extends the free angular end F of a guard F held on the cross bar E and having an extension F .bearing on the arm D for a preceding holder B so as to press this arm D'in firm contact with the uppermost bag to sprevent accidental displacement of the bags in a holder. The guard F is made of spring wire and the extension F bears on the corresponding arm D in the rear of the member B of the preceding holder B, it being understood that each member B of a holder is provided with a cut-out portion B (see Fig. 3) for the passage of the arms D and guards F. By having the angular ends F extend in the front of the bags in a holder, it is evident that the user is not liable to draw out more than one bag at a time especially as the bags are set up in step form in the holder, and the angular end F of a guard extends across the front edges of the bags. The bag member B of a holder B abuts against the member B of the next following holder approximately at the middle thereof with the members Bf standing approximately parallel one to the other, so as to accommodate a large number of paper bags in a holder, and to permit of arranging the holders one adjacent the other to form a rack with many holders without taking up much space. End bars G connect the members B and B of a holder with each other at the sides thereof, so as to prevent accidental lateral displacement of the bags in a holder. In practice, the side bars G are extended to form a crossbar G passing under the member B for engagement by the terminal edge of the member B of an adjacent holder so as to form an exceedingly strong structure, it being understood that the terminal of a member B is wrapped around the cross bar G of'the side bar G.
When it is desired to'set the rack in an inclined position on a counter then use is made of a leg H pivoted on the frame A and connected by links or braces I with brackets J adjustably held on the side bars Patented July 2, i912.
A springof the frame A 30 as to give the desired inclination to the rack. The pivot K for connecting the link I with the corresponding bracket J is preferably in the form of a clamping bolt so as to clamp the bracket J in position on the frame A, and at the same time form' a pivot for the link I. Thus by the arrangement described the leg is held securely in adjusted position to support the frame A in the desired inclined position. If desired, the leg H may be folded under the frame A and the latter be placed fiat 011 the counter, or, if desired, the frame A may be attached to the wall or other vertical support. By arranging the rack in the manner described, the paper bags may be removed from the holders or pockets B in a very simple and easy manner and without danger of pulling out more than one bag at a time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A rack for holding paper bags, comprising a series of adjacent holders of different lengths and depths to accommodate paper bags of corresponding sizes, the said holders having cross bars at their-bottom edges, an arm fulcrumed on the cross bar of one holder and adapted to engage with its free end the uppermost'bag in the preceding holder, and a spring member held on said cross bar and bearing on the arm to press the same in firm contact with said uppermost bag. a
2. A rack for holding paper bags pro-- vided with a series of ad acent holders, each approximately V-shape in cross section for holding a plurality of superimposed bags in step form, a spring arm bearing with its free end on the uppermost bag in a holder, and a spring guard extending in front of the front edges of the bagsin a holder, the said guard having an extension bearing on the arm for the preceding holder.
3. A rack for holding paper bags, comprising a frame, a series of connected hold ers approximately V-shape in cross section and of different lengths and depths, .the'
holders being mounted on the said frame, bars connecting the members of a holder with each other at the sides, a spring arm held on' the bottom edge of one holder and engaging the uppermost bag in the preced-- ing holder, and a spring guard held on the bottom edge of one holder and extending to the front thereof in front of the bags of this holder.
4;. A rack for holding paper bags, comprising a frame, a series of connected holders approximately V-shape in cross sect-ion and of different lengths and depths, the holders being mounted on the said frame, bars connecting the members of a holder with each other at the sides, an arm pivoted on the bottofii edge of'one holder and extending into a preceding holder to engage the uppermost bag in this holder and a guard of spring wire attached to'the bottom edge of a holder and extending exteriorly thereof to the front of the holder in front of the bags in the holder, the said guard having an extension forming a spring bearing on the arm for the preceding holder.
5. A rack for holding paper bags, comprising a series ofadjacent holders of approximately V-shape and of different lengths and depths to accommodate paper bags of corresponding sizes, a spring arm 'bearing with its free end on the uppermost bag in a holder, a spring guard extending in front of the front edges of the bags in a holder, a frame rigidly supporting the said holders, a leg pivoted on the said frame, a brace pivot-ally connected with the said leg, and an adjust-able bracket on the frame and on which the said brace is pivoted.
6. A rack for holding paper bags, comprising a series of connected holders, an arm held on the bottom of one holder and engaging with its free end the uppermost bag in the preceding holder, and a spring guard held on the bottom of one holder and extending in front of the front edges of the bags in said holder, the said guard having .a member bearing on the arm for the preceding holder.
7. A rack for holding paper bags, comprising a series of adjacent holders, each approximately V-shape in cross section, for holding a plurality of bags, one of the members of each holder having a portion cut out forming an opening, and an arm pivoted on the bottom edge of one holderlat the junction of its members and passing through the said' opening in a member of a preceding holder to engage the uppermost bag in thelast mentioned holder.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing. witnesses.
CHARLES JACOB TABER.
