To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED PAriLLoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mermenton, in the parish of Acadia and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Delivery- Valves for Centrifugal Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilledin the art v to which it appertains to make and use the I regular, and
same.
This invention "relates to improvements'in centrifugal pumps, and more especially pertains to the delivery valve and its casing.
The objectof the present invention is to provide a pump'of the character mentioned of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanylng drawings, and pointed out in the'appended claims.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a centrifugal pump provided with the herein-described invention, the delivery pipe thereof and the adjacent parts being shown in section.. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the delivery valve casing and valve on the line 22, Fig. 1, the valve being illustrated in closed posit-ion. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the delivery valve casing. Fig. 4'is a transverse sectional view,
on an enlarged scale, ofthe removable valve seat.
Referring to the drawings,
designates a centrifugal pump,
the numeral 1 which may be of ordinary construction'and providedwith the inlet 2 and the outlet 3. The outlet 3 is flanged, as at 4, and'bolted to said flange 4 is a bushing 5 having a lower flange 6 and an upper flange 7 said flanges being braced by longitudinally-extending struts 8 in order to strengthen the same. Surmounting the bushing 5 is a delivery 'valve chamber 9, to a which a delivery pipe 10 is connected in any suitable manner, and said casing is flanged at its lower end, as at 11, whereby the same may be fixed to the upper flange 7 of the bushing 5, a series of bolts 12 being employed for this purpose.
As before premised, it is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a removable seat for the delivery valve, the latter being designated by the numeral 13, and to this end an annular valve seat 14 is interposed between the flange 7 of the bushing 5 and the flange 11 of the casing 9, the opening of said valve seat corresponding in size to the bore of the bushing 5 but being less than the diameter of the casing9. The valve seat 14 is provided with an outer series of openings 15 through which openings the bolts 12 are passed to secure the valve seat in proper position upon the bushing 5, and said valve seat is also provided with an inner series of openings 16 surrounded by countersinks 17. The openings 16 and the countersinks 17 are designed to receive a series of rivets 18, which are pressed tightly in place in the valve seat, and interposed between the valve seat 14 and the flange 7 is a packing gasket 19. A similar gasket 20 ,is also arranged between the flange 11 of the casing 9 and the upper face of the seat 14, said gasket- 20 being of the same width as the width of thelseat 14 in order to eflectually cover the 1 upper surface thereof. The purpose of this gasket 20 is to afford a ti ht joint when the delivery valve 13 is seated thereon, and this occurs when the pump is not working-, the valve 13 being seated by gravity in an obvious manner. The gasket 20 is held in place by the rivets 18.
By referring to Fig. 3, it will be observed that the lower end of the casing 9 is provided with a flattened bearing surface 21 arranged at one of its sides, and the adjacent edge of the valve 13 is provided with a similar surface 22 designed to bear against the surface 21 when the valve is closed. Thus the valve 13 is limited in its downward movement, but not before the same is effectually seated upon the gasket 20 to form a tight joint with the seat 14.
In order to effectually hinge the valve 13 r within the casing 9, said valve is provided at its upper surface with parallel perforated ears 23 between which is fitted a perforated lug 24 carried by an attaching plate 25, which is located at the exterior of the casing 9, and which lug 24 projects -through an opening in the casing 9 adjacent to the lower end thereof. The shank of the pin 26 forms the means whereby the valve 13 is hinged to the lug 24, and said pinis provided with a threaded neck 27, of enlarged diameter, which threaded neck is designed to enter a threaded opening 28 in the side of the casing 9 and be held therein to maintain the pin 26 in its proper relation tothe valve 13. The pin 26 is also provided with a head 29 whereby the same may be'rotated when it is desired to remove and replace said pin. This construction is clearly shown in Fig. 2. The casing 9 is also provided with a sight opening 30, whereby the valve 13 'is'visible from the exterior of the casing 9, and said opening 30 is closed by a covering plate 31 suitably held in position.
The pump 1 is also provided with a priming device 32, whichpriming device is preferably in the form of an ejector, the device 32 being connected to the casing of the pump and having itsdischarge pipe. connected to the casing 9so that upon operation the air exhausted from the casingof the pump 1 is projected into the delivery pipe.
The operation of the herein described pump, after the same has been primed, is as usual, the body of water lifted by the pump and discharged through the outlet 3, forcing the valve 13 from its seat into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.' So long as the pump continues to operate the valve remains in this position, but immediately upon the pump ceasing its operation'the valve 13 gravitates to its closed position wherein the same is seated upon the gasket 20 carried by the seat 14. If at any time it is desired to remove the seat 14 the same may be readily bolts and raising the chamber 9 to permit the seat 14 being withdrawn, and if at any time the packing 20 should become wornto necessitate new packing being substituted therefor-the same may be readily done in a similar manner. Whenever it is desired to examine the valve 13,without disconnecting the various parts, this may also be accom-- plished by removing the covering plate 31 to expose'the opening 30, and through the latter the valve may be readily seen;
