To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that we, Jens NIELSEN and PETER CHRISTIAN PETERSEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Cedar Falls, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements, in Rotary Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rotary engines or pumps, and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to improve structurally the details of the several features shown in prior patent for rotary engine, granted October 29, 1912, No. 1,042,951, to Jens Nielsen, one of the applicants to the present application.
With the above and other objects in view,
the engine or pump includes a casing having a detachable side or head, and a rotor journaled in the casing. The casing is provided with inlet and outlet ports which are disposed approximately at right angles to each other. The rotor is provided upon its inner side with a series of spaced vanes. The rotor is keyed to a shaft which traverses the length of a sleeve journaled in the casing. Means is provided for securely holding the rotor, the shaft, and the sleeve in fixed position with relation to each other, and a shoulder connection is provided between the shaft and the sleeve at the inner end portions thereof for preventing liquid or pressure from escaping from the pump between the shaft and the sleeve. Suitable pulleys are mounted upon the sleeve and a thrust bearing is provided for holding the same against longitudinal movement. A reversible cone-shaped clip is detachably mounted upon the outer end of the shaft and a nut screw-threaded upon the outer end of the sleeve is adapted to engage said clip whereby the shoulder of the shaft is held in close contact with the shoulder in the sleeve.

The said wheel isv provided with peripheral teeth which inter-mesh with the said vanes. The wheel is provided at that side adjacent the head with an extended hub portion surrounded by spaced annular flange. The said extension of the hub and flange are embedded or received in grooves provided in the said head. The bore in the said wheel which receives the shaft does not ex tend all of the way through the wheel, and a lubricant is adapted to be passed through the opening of the shaft and out of the inner end thereof into the bore of the wheel whereby the parts are efiiciently lubricated.
/Vith these and other objects in view, the intention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described, and then particularly pointed out in the claims and in the drawings illusrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The machine includes a base 1 upon which is mounted a standard 2. A casing 3 is also mounted upon the base 1, and is closed at the outer side by a detachable head 4. The said casing is provided with ports 5 and 6 which are disposed approximately at right angles to each other, and through which fluid pressure may be passed for operating the machine as an engine or through which liquid may be passed when the machine operates as a pump. A sleeve 7 is journaled in the casing 3, and the standard 2, and the seidsleeve is provided with a threat Law hearing 8 in the standard 2 whereby the said sleeve is restrained against longitudinal movement. A stufiing box 9 eflects a closure between the periphery of the sleeve 7 and the casing 3. A suitable pulley 10 is mounted upon the sleeve 7 between the standard 2 and the casing 3. A nut 11 is screw threaded upon the end portion of the sleeve 7 beyond the standard 2, and a shaft 12 is located within the sleeve 7 and traverses the length thereof. The shaft 12 is provided with a reduced end portion 13 which carries a head 14. A reversible cone-shaped clip 15 is provided with. a slot 16 which receives the reduced portion 13 of the shaft 12, and the said clip is positioned between the head 14 and the nut 11. The sleeve 7 is provided at its inner end with an interiorly located shoulder 17, and the shaft 12 is provided with a shoulder 13 which is adapted to be drawn in close contact with the shoulder 17 when the nut 11 is screwed tight against the clip 15. A rotor 19 is located in the casing 3, and is keyed upon the inner end of the shaft 12 beyond the inner end of the sleeve 7. The said rotor is provided at its inner side with a series of spaced vanes 20'. Apin 22 is solid in the hub portion of the rotor 19, the outer portion of the pin fitting in the recess in the end portion of the sleeve 7, whereby the sleeve, the shaft and the rotor are held in fixed relation with respect to each other.
T he edge of the vopening in the casing 3 which receives the edge portion of the detachable head 4 is provided with an annular groove having a concaved bottom 23. This groove is adapted to contain a packing 24 whereby a tight joint iseflected between the said-head and the casing 3.
1n the form of the invention as shown in Fig. 8, the head 4 is secured to the casing 3 by means of bolts 25. A shaft 26 passes transversely through the head 4 and is provided with a'centralbore or opening 27. The inner end of the bore 27 is flared or enlarged as at 28. 'A lubricant cup 29 is attached to the outer end of the shaft 26, and the discharge of the said cup communicates with the said bore 27. A wheel 30 is journaled upon the inner .end portion of the shaft 26, and is provided with an extended hub portion 31 at one side which is snugly received in a recess 32 provided in the inner side of the head 4. The opening in the wheel 30 which receives the inner end portion of the shaft 26 does not pass all ofthe way transversely through the said wheel so that the bore 27 is closed at the inner end of the shaft 26. Consequentlv the lubricant which is passed through the bore 27 and the enlargement 28 must pass between the exterior of the inner end portion of the shaft 26, and the opening in the wheel 30 which receives the inner portion of the said shaft as the said wheel 36 rotates. The wheel 30 is provided upon its periphery with teeth 33 whichmesh with the vanes 20 carried by the rotor 19. By reference to Fig. 4 of the drawing, it will be seen that the teeth 33 of the wheel 30 mesh with the, vanes 20 of the rotor 19 approximately between the ports 5 and 6 only, in View of the fact that the wheel 30 is eccentrically positioned'with relation to the said rotor. The head 4 carries at its inner side a crescent-shaped portion 34 which is located between the lower portion of the wheel 30 and the lowermost vane 20. The said crescent-shaped portion 34 is also located approximately opposite the ports 5 and 6. As shown in Fig. 8 of the drawing, the rotor 19 is mounted directly upon a shaft 12 and the sleeve 7 hereinbefore described is' dispensed with. The wheel 30 is provided at the same side at which the hub extension 31 is located with an annular flange 35 which is spaced from said hub extension and the said flange 35' is snugly received in an annular groove 36 provided at the inner side of the head 4. This flange and groove together with the hub extension 31 and the groove 32 in which it is received, serve to prevent the lubricant from escaping between the wheel 30 and the inner side of the head 4, and at the same time they serve to prevent grit or matter which passes through the ports 5 and 6 from entering between the said wheel 30 and the head 4. As shown in detail in Fig. 9, the wheel 30 is provided with an opening which extends all of the way through the same and which receives the inner portion of the shaft 26. The inner end of the said opening is closed by a plate 37 which bears loosely against the inner end of the shaft 26.
Blocks 38 and 39 are formed at the upper and lower portions respectively of the easing 3 and are provided with vertically disposed openings. The block 38 is provided at its underside with a lug 40 which enters a recess 41 provided in the periphery of the head 4 whereby the said head 4 is held against rotation in the casing 3. A tension screw 41 is threaded into the central portion of the head 4 and is provided with a head 42 having a conical outer end 43. A bar 44 is adapted to fit at one end in the opening in the block 39, the said bar having a shoulder near that end to prevent it from sinking too deep into the opening in block 39. The bar 44 is provided between its ends with a V-shaped recess 45 which receives the cone-shaped end 43 of the head 42 of the screw 41". A lever 46 is fulcrumed at the other end of the bar 44 and is provided with a short end portion 47 adapted to enter into the opening in block 38 when the long end portion of the said lever 46 is swung against the intermediate portion of the bar 44. The lever 46 is provided at its longer m mes end with a hook 48, the bill of which is disposed toward the outer side of the bar 44, and a bail 49 is pivotally mounted upon the bar 44 and adapted to be swung into engage.

In closing operation the head 4 being in its proper place against the casing 3, the shoulder end of the bar M is placed in the opening in block 39 and the long end of the lever 4-6 is swung out so that the short end 47 can enter the opening in block 38, the long end of the lever is then pushed against the bar and the bail &9 drops into engagement with the hook d8 and thus locking the lever to the bar. The head of the tension screw 41 being beforehand placed at the proper distance out from the head at so that the bar 4% must spring somewhat in the process of locking whereby the head 4 is held firmly against the casing 3. To take apart, push the long end of the lever against the bar, disengage the bail from the hook and swing out the lever so that its short end 417 slips out of the block 38 and the bar at can be removed.
Therefore it will be seen that we have provided an engine or pump of simple structure and that the detailed improvements in the various parts add materially to the convenience of handling the parts and facilitate the. general operation or utility of the pump or engine.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having deseribed the invention what is claimed, is
1. A rotary machine comprising a casing, a rotor journaled therein, a wheel journaled within the rotor and engaging the same, a shaft passing through the casing and upon which said wheel is journaled, said shaft having a bore passing longitudinally through the same, the inner end of said bore being closed by the said Wheel.
2. A rotary machine comprising a casing, a shaft passing through the casing and being provided with a longitudinal bore which is enlarged at its inner end, a rotor journaled in the casing, a wheel journaled upon said shaft and engaging the rotor and clos ing the enlarged end of said bore.

In a. rotary machine, a casing, a rotor journaled in the casing, a shaft passing through the side of the. casing and provided witha longitudinal bore, a wheel journaled upon said shaft and engaging the rotor and closing the inner end of the bore, said wheel having at its side ,a hub extension, the said casing being provided with a groove which receives said extension.

5. A rotary machine comprising a casing,
having at one side an annular groove provided with a concave bottom, a packing located in said groove, a head detachably applied to the casing and adapted to bear against said packing, a rotor journaled in the casing, a wheel journaled upon the head and engaging said rotor.

A rotary machine comprising a casing, a rotor journaled therein, a wheel journaled in the casing and engaging the rotor, a detachable head closing the casing and supporting said wheel, blocks formed upon the casing and having openings, a detachable bar engaging the openings in said blocks, said bar having at its inner side a V-shaped recess, a screw threaded in the head and having a cone-shaped outer end which engages the recess in the bar.

A rotary machine comprising a casing having a detachable head, a rotor journaled in the casing, a wheel journaled in the easing, and supported by the head and engaging the rotor, said casing having blocks provided with openings, a bar engaging the openings of the blocks, means for creating tension between the bar and the head, one of the blocks having a lug, and the said head having a recess adapted toreceive said lug.

A rotary machine comprising a casing, a head detachably closing the casing, said casing having blocks provided with openings, a bar having an end adapted to enter the opening of one block, a lever fulcrumed upon the bar and having an end adapted to 7 enter the opening in the other block, means for securing the free end portion of the lever to the bar, and a screw interposed between the head andthe bar,

A rotary machine comprising a casing, a detachable head closing the casing, said casing having blocks provided with openings, a bar adapted to be inserted at one end in the opening of one block, a lever fulcrumed to the bar and having a short end adapted to be inserted in the opening of the other block, said lever being provided at its long end with a hook, a bail pivoted upon the bar and adapted to engage said hook, and a tension means interposed between the head and the intermediate portion of the bar.
10; A rotary machine comprising a see- Mid ing, a sleeve journaled in the casing, a shaft located in the sleeve, a rotor mounted upon the shaft and located in the casing, and a pin connecting the sleeve with the shaft and disposed radially of the sleeve andshaft.

A rotary machine Comprising a casing, a sleeve journaled in the casing, a shaft traversing the length of the sleeve and having an end portion projecting beyond the sleeve and provided with a reduced portion and a head, a rotor mounted upon the said shaft and located in the casing, a coneshaped clip having its opposite faces of the same configuration and provided with a recess adapted to receive the reduced portion of the shaft and adapted to bear against the head at the end of the shaft, and a nut screw threaded upon the sleeve and adapted to bearagainst the inner face of said clip.

A rotary machine comprising a casing, a rotor journaled therein, a wheel engaging the rotor, a head closing the casing and supporting said Wheel, and a shaft passing through the head and upon which said Wheel is journaled, said shaft having a bore passing longitudinally through the same, the inner end of said bore being closed by the said WheeL,
