PUMP-PRIMER.
Specifipation of team Patent.
en ma Oct. 6, 1908.
Application fi1ed'0otobei' 12, 1907.. seri l No. 397,062.
To altwltom it may concern:
Be'it known. that I, JOHN J. BATAILLE, a
East Orange,in the county of Essex and. State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump- Prinlers; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled n1 the art to which it appertains to I make and use the same, reference being had to the aecompanyingdrawings, and .to' fig. ures ofYeference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
. This invention relates toa -pump primer,
and is designed to provide a pump 'strue-j ture that combines a manually operated or hand pump with a casing therefor having an. auxiliary duct, and a check valve suspended between the main channel and the auxiliary duct of the pump, this valve acting also as a'main "check valve to the pump proper. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure illustrates the primer in section-with a portion ofthe pump illustrated. in elevation;-
Any usual form of pump 10 is employed,
and on the inlet end. thereof is secured a casing v11, of the primer, which has the inlet portion .12 and the outlet 1 3,.this outlet, of. the'primer, being secured to the inlet of the pump. A cover 14 is installed on the top of the primer'to form a'closure, and operating in. the pump is'a piston rod 15, on the projeeting'end of which is a handle 16 and which has, on its lower endwithin the pump, an ordinary plunger 17, as employed in lift pumps. At the ottom' ofthe pump is a checkvalve l0 -which opens to allow water to pass through when the piston is lifted, and closes to prevent water escaping when the piston is forced downward, or when suction ceases. A partition 18'-is installed in the casing of the primer, which forms, with the outer wall 11 of the primer casing, an-
" auxiliary duct 19, the water thus being drawn in through the primer inlet 12, up through the piston 17, over the top of the partition 18, down the auxlhary duct 19,
and then through the outlet 13 of the primer.'
Suspended on the bottom of the partition 18 is a check .valve 20 which is inoperative .or shut while the primer is operatedpthis valve,.howe\-'er, being swung open when the pump operated, the valve being opened bythe suction. I provide a removable cap 21, above the-check valve 20, to provide for repairing,'clea ning and any other uses tofi which it might be put.
lVheLnthe pump is to be filled, before its operation begins, the primer is manipulated by meansof the handle 16, and the water passes through the primer, the auxiliary duct thereof, and then into the main pump, the check valve 20 being 'inthe meantime closed automatically. The device is compact, and
is situated so that it in no way interferes with the operation ofthe pump, when the primer isnot in use.
Having" thus described my nvention, what I claim is I I 1.111 combination with a pump, of a primer comprising a casing having an inlet portion and an outlet portion. the outlet por tion being ada'pted'to be secured to the inlet of the pump, a pump portion transversely arranged on the casing, a partition in the .pump .portion forming two ducts, a piston and its rod on one side of the partition, and
ducts, a pump and its piston in one duct, and
a check valve hinged to the bottom of.the partition and kept closed by the suction on the pump portion and also by the Water pass 'ing from the pump portion to the pump.
' In testimony, that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto'set my hand this tenth day of October 1907.
JOHN J. BATAILLE.
