Description

J. L. ASHWORTH.
WIRE STRETCHER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.11,1912.
atented July 2, MM2.
LSLSI,
WITH/8858 PATENT onmon.
am: Laws AsnwonTH, or TnomrsoN STATION, TENNESSEE.
'WIBE-STRETCHEB.
Speoication of Letters Patent.
limitation tiled January 11,1912'. erialfNo. 670,595.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JIM Laws AsHWoRTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Thompson Station, in the county of Williamson and State of Tennessee, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers, of which the followin is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wire stretching devices, and it consists in the constructions, combinations and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device which may be used as a boomer or a woven wire or a barb wire stretcher, and which while eifectually accomplishing the purpose for which it lis intended is simple, and is therefore not liable to get out of order.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device which may be manipulated by one person in the wire stretching operation.
Other objects and advantages Will appear in the following specification, andthe novel features of the devicey willvbe particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
-My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application in which?- Figure 1 is a view showing the use of my invention, Fig. 2-is a side view of the device showing the method of operation, Fig. 3 is a 'plan view of the device, Fig. 4 is a view showing another operating position of the device.
In carrying out my invention I provide a main body portion A having means, such as the socket 1, for attachment of a handle 2. The body portion A is provided with a slot 3 (see Fig. 3) extending inwardly from one end and terminates in a pair of hooks or claws 4 and @on each side of the slot 3. Disposed within the slot 3 is one end of an arm 5 which terminates in two hooks or claws 5a and 5b.
Embracing the body portion A is a clevis 6, which is rovided at its end with a ring 7 to which 1s attached a hook 8. A second clevis 9 has its arms disposed outside of the arms of the clevis 6, and to the clevis 9 are bolted the two claws l()a and 10", as shown in Fig. 3. A bolt 11 passes through the clevis 9, through the clevis 6, and through the body portion A, pivotally securing these together. A similar bolt 11" passes through'the opposing arms of the clevis 9, the cevls 6 and the body portion A, the bolts 11 and 11 being in alinement but being independent. The arm 5 is pivotally secured to the body portion within the recess 3 by means of a pin 12.
From the foregoing description of the varlous parts of the device' the operation thereof may be -readily understood.
In using thisdevice a link of the chain 19 is inserted between. the claws 5 and 5" of the arm 5 in the manner shown in Fig'. 2. vNow by pulling the handle into position shown invFig. 1 tension. will be exerted on the chain 17 which will stretch the Wires which are to be attached thereto. The pivot brought above the pivotal portion'll, and therefore the device remains locked. The operator may now engage the chain 19 with the claws 10a and 10b of the clevis 10, as shown in Fig..1. The handle may then be swung into its original position, thereby disengaging the claws 5a and 5b and permitting them to be brou ht into engagement with another link. handle back again into position shown in Fig. 1 the Wire is still further tightened and the claws 10a and 101. may be shifted to another link. Thus the device may be made to gradually stretch the wires to the desired point. It will be observed that each time the handle is brought into the position shown in Fig. 1 the device is locked so as to ermit the use of both hands in manipulating the claws 58L and 5b and 10a and 10b.
The operation described above may be made to pull up eight inches of slack wire at one stroke. lesser distance the operation is conducted as follows: The claws 4 and 4b on the end of the body portion A are brought into engagement wit-h the chain 19, whenv the handle is moved toward the right instead of toward the left, e'. e., in the opposite direction to that shown in Fig. 1. This results in the pulling of the Wire until the claws 5a and 5b may be engaged behind a link of the chain 19, thereby curely.
' I claim:
In a wire stretching device, a body portion provided with a handle, said body portion terminating in a pair of claw members,
, Patented1 July 2; 1era.
ow on swinging the` If it is desired to pull it a holding the wire sea clevi's provided lwith* a hook, a second clevises to said body portion and the handle, clevis provided with a claw, a' pir o-alned said arm being arranged `to pass between pivots for securingl both of said clevises to the claw Vmembers of said body portion. `said body portion, and an arm provided with JIM LAWS ASHWORTH.
Y 5 a claw, said arm being pivotally connected Witnesses:
to said body portion at a point off-set from W. R. WADDEY, and between the pivotal connections of the J. T. RAGSDALE.
