Lil lie 30990 11 Atlorney INVENTOR LILLIE BOGGAN, OF ATKINS, ARKANSAS.
BRAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application filed February 23, 1911. Serial No. 610,174.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LILLIE BOGGAN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Atkins, in the county of Pope and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in obstetrical appliances, more especially for use in parturition or women in child labor.
The invent-ion has for its principal object, among other things, to facilitate the delivery operation and to greatly relieve discomfort. I
A further object is to provide a novel device for the above purposes, which will carry out the intended end in an effective manner.
Also an object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple, readily applied and inexpensive contrivance for effecting the aforesaid purposes.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, wherein various changes or modifications as relates to details thereof are allowable without departing from the spirit of the invention, provided the same may fall within the scope of the appended claims Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2, is a like view of portions of the brace members, folded. Fig. 3, is a cross section produced through one of the padded end-bars, and showing portions of the brace members.
In carrying out my invention, I employ what may be termed a brace, as shown, preferably constructed of metal and adapted for disposition or application intermediate of the lower limbs, for service as a brace, as will be disclosed more fully later. Said brace comprises the separable, duplicate members 2, 2 which are secured together at one end and extended in V shape, as disclosed, each including longitudinal inclined lateral bars, 3, with their outer divergent ends secured together by an arcuate end-bar, 4, which is formed integral therewith, the curvature thereof conforming to the general contour of the portion of the limb with which it is designed to contact. The end-bars, 4:, are suitably padded as at 5, by securing a suitably filled section of leather or cloth to the portions 3 and 4, for the comfort of the user. The meeting or convergent ends of the brace section 2, are brought in contact to form a single piece orextension 6, and is adapted to be received between parallel like extensions, 7, of the other bracesection, 2, and said sections are held in this position by a pivot-pin, 8, and a removable pin, 9, which are disposed through registering openings in the extensions 6 and 7 The removable pin, 9, may be displaced when desired when the brace-sections may be folded as shown in Fig. 2, the same then pivoting upon the retained pivot-pin, 8, for storing, for instance in a portable medicine cabinet or case, as may be desired.
Suitable straps, 10, 10, are secured to the brace-sections 2, 2 adjacent the ends of the padded portions, so as to cooperate with the padded end-bars, 4, of said brace-sections for the application of the brace to the lower limbs, at points just below the knees, the straps 10, being provided with buckles or clasps for engagement with the openings in the straps, 10, in effecting such application, as will be readily understood. Additional straps 11, are also secured to the brace-sections 2, 2 acent to the straps 10, said straps having hand-receiving loops, 12, at their outer free ends for enabling the user to conveniently exert a pulling action upon the brace, as in relieving discomfort and facilitating the parturition process or action.
This device is exceedingly simple in construction, readily applied for use, inexpensive to manufacture, and enabling in its action, as is apparent.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
A brace of the character described comprising a pair of triangular shaped frames having the apexes thereof pivotally con nected to admit of the frames being folded against each other or swung apart so as to extend in opposite directions, the side of In testimony whereof I aflix my signature each ig'ame op1%osite the plivolted apex being in presence of two Witnesses.
sape toconormtote e,strasaplied to the frames for holdin g the figs i 11 LILLIE engagement with the said sides, and means Witnesses: V or A for holding the frames rigidly in a distended or W. O. TETLER,
position. A J. CARPENTER.
