To all woo/a at may concern:
' Be it known that I, JOHN E. CONZELMAIQ;
a citizen of United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concrete Construction, (Diiiisi'ohal Case Q) of which the following is a This invention relates to certain-new and useful improvements in concrete construc- 'tion, in which concrete girders are used to support concrete slabs and are themselves girders and slabs are effectively connected to each other and to the supporting column or upright and in which wide girders, channeled to give a paneled effect, may be utilized.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a frag- =mentary perspective view of the present in-- vent'iom-Fig. 2 is a top plan View, and Fig.
3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
- Each girder '1- is preferably formed with a rectangular configuration, and is comparatively Wide and tliin.- Each longitudinal edge of the girder 1 is provided with a shoulder 2 on which the slabs 3 seat. The
girder ends rest upon a cap 1, the latter resting on the top face 5 of. cap 6, cap 6 being carried by the supporting column 7. A stud 8 is carried by cap 6, and extends into an opening 9 in cap 1 so that a space 10 above the stud is left within opening 9. Each corner of girder 1 is preferably bevcled so that,when the ends of the girders are placed upon cap 4, each beveled corner fits against a similarly beveled corner of an adjoining girder. lVhen the girders 1 are placed upon cap 1 in the manner just described, a space 11 located above the cap is provided, the space 11 being disposed above the space 10.
For the purpose of providing a girder having a section of maximum economy, 0., a girder containing no excess of concrete, the middle portion of the under side of the girder is channeled between approximately the quarter points of the span thereof so that each side of said girder is provided the stirrups 1 1. bent upwardly, and extend. near the girders and project from the ends of the latter; The
with a flange dr rib 12. As additional strengthening means, reinforcing bars 13 are embedded. near the top surfaces of girders 1 and are spaced at intervals 'in same. The bars 13 extend transversely of the girders, and are bent downwardly at their ends to form stirrups 14 adjacent the glrder sides, the purpose, of the bars 13 being to stltlen the girders, toprevent transgirders 1 and are spaced at 'intervalsin the I girders at. points near the bottom surfaces thereof, in order to carry the load between flanges 12. Short bars 17 also underlie bars :13 and pro ect from the girder ends, the bars 17 being arranged to assist 111 taking up the, tensile stress obviously existing in the top surface of that part of the girders 1, that rest upon cap Bars 18 he nearthe bottoms-of flanges 12 and extend through Some of. the bars-1S are bars 16, 17, and 18 that project from the girder ends extend into space 11 and preferably overlap similar bars 16, 17, and 18 respectively, projecting from the adjacent end of an oppositely-disposed girder.
Each slab 3 is preferably reinforced in both directions by means of bars 21 in order to distribute its load to the girders supporting the same, the bars 21 being embedded near the bottom faces of slabs 3.
As will be seen from Figs. 1 and 23, the top faces of slabs 3 extend above the top faces of the girders, thereby providing a space of cruciform between the inner side faces of the four girders, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The bars 21 in the slabs 1 project from the sides of the slabs and overlap the ends of similar bars 21, which project from the sides of an adjacent slab. The cruciform space is filled with groutor plastic concrete 40 which runsinto and fills spaces 10 and 1.1.. the top faces of slabs and, when it sets. unites the slabs El, girders 1, cap 1, and column 7 integrally together.
15y reason of forming \vide girders 1, the space 11 consequently comparatively large, thereby allowing the base of a superii'nposml column, not shown, to be set in The grout is leveled otf flush with ber, rods carried by each girder andprojectr ilsp'aee without the necessity of provid m re girder ends with cutawayv portions,
as has been customa'ry heretofore, thebars ,16',17,-and 18, being spaced'so-that ano'pen 's'p'aee between the innermost bars-is left 1n the center of spa'c 11 for the -pl'ao ingfjthe base-of the-column, not showngzthereiny f Whitis claimed is: I
