To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, MICHAEL MANDAK, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Slatyfork, in the county of Pocahontas and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Retainers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to hat retainers and has for its object to provide means in a manner as hereinafter set forth for retaining a hat upon the head of a person to prevent it from being accidentally blown off by gusts of wind.

The hat retainer is designed primarily for use in connection with mens headgear, but it is to be understood that it is adapted for any purpose wherein it is found applicable.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a hat retainer which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eilicient and convenient in its use, readily connected to a hat and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a hat of the derby class, showing the adaptation therewith of a hat retainer in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the retainer, its operating shaft being broken away.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes the crown of a hat, 2 the rim, 3 the exterior band and 4 the sweat band. The crown 1 of the hat above the band 3, but in close proximity thereto, is provided with an eye-let 5 which constitutes a bearing for a purpose to be presently referred to.

The retainer includes a substantially rectangular frame 6 having inwardly extending flanges 7 to provide a guide way 8.

Projecting from each corner of the frame 6 is a lug 9 carrying the male member 10 of a socket fastener. The female member of the fastener, which is indicated at 11, is carried by the sweat band 1. Two socket fasteners are employed, but only one shown. These fasteners are used for detachably connecting the frame 6 to the sweat band 4- of the hat.

Slidably mounted in the guide ways 8 of the frame 6 is a shiftable retaining member consisting of a rectangular body portion 12 having projecting therefrom a series of tines 13 which are adapted to engage in the hair 14 of the. wearer of the hat, when the member 12 is shifted in a direction from the frame 6 through a means to be presently referred to.

The reference character let denotes a pair of resilient shifting arms, which are slidably connected to the eyes 15 carried by the body portion 12 of the retaining member. The arms 11 are secured to a collar 16 carried on the inner end of an actuating shaft 17 which is journaled in the eyelet 5 and which carries a finger piece 18. The finger piece 18 is arranged exteriorly in the crown 1, while the stop collar 16 abuts against the eyelet 5. The said finger piece and collar 16 prevent longitudinal movement of the shaft 17, but do not interfere with the rotative movement of said shaft. The shaft 17 is positioned toone side of the frame 6 and when shifted in the direction as indicated by the arrow A, the retaining member will be drawn by the arms 11 into the frame 6, but when shifted in a direction as indicated by the arrow B, the retaining member will be shifted outwardly with respect to the frame 6 to engage in the hair 14 of the wearer of the hat.

The frame 6 as well as the retaining member are curvilinear in contour and the collar 16 detachably mounted 011 the inner end of the shaft 17 so that the latter can be removed from the hat when occasion so requires. As the arms 11 are slidably connected to the retaining member, it is obvious that they can be detached from said member and the latter can be removed from the interior of the hat owing to the fact that it is detachably connected in position by the socket fasteners.

What I claim is A hat retainer comprising a curved frame provided at each end with guide ways and capable of being detaohably secured to the sweat band of a hat, a shiftable curved tined retaining member mounted in said guide ways and capable of being shifted to engage in the hair of the wearer of the hat, an inwardly extending shaft adapted to be journaled in the hat to which the frame is attached, a collar mounted upon the inner end of said shaft, and a pair of resilient arms slidably connected at one end of said member and at the other end to said collar and capable of being actuated when the shaft is rocked whereby said member will be shifted to engage in the hair of the wearer of the hat.
