To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'thatl, ROBERT E. CAMPBELL, citizen of the United States, residing at \Voodland, in the county of Yolo and State of'Ca'lifornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in washing machines of the particular style or kind upon which I obtained Lette'rs Patent of the United States'on the 24th day of September 1907, and numberedm866,912.

The machine upon which this improvement is made is a hand machine and designed to be operated exclusively by hand power, but it was Vfound desirable for various reasons to convert the machine into a powermachine so that it can be run without any expense or outlay of personal labor 1n its operation and be connected up with any suitable source of power, such as a small water motor or electric motor or other power that may be available for the purpose.
The invention herein therefore resides essentially in the operating mechanism as it is connected up with the wash tank and other parts'substantially as disclosed in my said patent and as will now appear.
Thus, referring to the said parts, F represents a metallic frame of substantially A shape in side elevation as shown in this instance with the tank T pivoted olf its middle portion or center of gravity at a to be off balance substantially as shown and so as to afford a considerable downward tilting and throw of the long end of the tank as compared with the short end and thus contribute to the tossing of the wash within the tank for cleansing the same, it being understood that so far as the frame vand the tank together are concerned with spring balancing mechanism there is no novelty claimed in this application.

The eifect and value of this arrangement is thatby means ofthe spring the tank will be held normally in a horizontal position and the spring will operate to effect this restora-\ tion or position automatically. Therefore the balancing of the tank upon the frame work or base is eifected primarily by the said spring and the said links related as shown and no other mechanism is needed to assist in obtaining this result.
The other parts of the machine shown have to do with the operation or with the power for this purpose, the same, however,
being arranged to cooperate with the said l in the manner shown and described.v
Of course it will be understood that a machine of this kind to get etfective results is necessarily limited in its tilt-ing movement, the idea being that washing of the clothing results from the tossing of the 'same With the water to and fro Within the long tank and in which the wash is cleansed by the agitation in the presence of water under thevright conditions of soap and heat'.
Now, having in view this structure as above described, with everything ready 'to be power operated, I provide a segment-al mangle or rack H supported from the short end of the tank by arms m pivoted upon .the bottom and short end of the tank and having the rack 7 or teeth therein adapted to be engaged between the sides of the mangle by a pinion 8 u )on a power actuated shaft 10.
