zen of the United States, residing at Provo, in the county of Utah and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrubbing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved scrubbing machine for washing or scrubbing floors and has for its object to provide a comparatively simple machine of this character whereby water is supplied to the scrubbing brush as the machine is moved over the floor.

Another object is to provide means adjustable on the machine whereby the floor in the corners of a room may be conveniently washed or scrubbed.

A further object of the invention is to provide a wheel supported water receptacle and a brush removably mounted beneath the same, and a mop holder adapted to be substituted for the brush to dry the floor.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a scrub hing machine embodying my improvements; Fig.2 is a transverse section through the machine; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the mop holder.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 5 designates a cylindrical water tank or reservoir which is mounted in the supporting brackets 6 rigidly secured to a wheel axle 8 adjacent to its ends. The supporting wheels 9 are revolubly mounted on the ends of the axle and a suitable handle 10 by means of which the machine is pushed is also mounted upon the'axle adjacent to the supporting wheels.

A cylindrical scrubbing brush 11 is mounted immediately beneath the wheel axle upon the shaft 12. To the ends of this shaft the attaching arms 13 are rigidly secured. The upper ends of said arms are bifurcated to receive the wheel axle, as shown at 13, and provided with a set screw 14 whereby said arms may be removably clamped upon the wheel axle to support the rotary scrubbing brush.

In the movement of the machine over the floor, the brush 11 is rotated by contact With the floor surface and water is sprayed upon the brush through a plurality of rows of perforations 15 provided in the water receptacle 5. A cut-off plate 16 extends the entire length of the receptacle 5 and is curved in concentric relation thereto. This plate is mounted for movement in guide strips 17 secured to the opposite ends of the water reservoir and is provided intermediate of its ends with suitable knobs or handles 16 by means of which said cut-off plate may be moved to open or close the water discharge perforations 15. In the'top of the receptacle 5 a sliding door 18 is arranged to close an opening through which the water is poured into the reservoir. This sliding door or closure plate is mounted in suitable guides 19 which are secured to the interior of the water receptacle at opposite ends of the opening.

An arm 20 is rigidly secured to the wheel axle 8 adjacent to each end thereof and extends forwardly of the water reservoir or receptacle 5. The ends of these arms are downturned, as shown at 20, and have removably arranged thereon a series of relatively adjustable scrubbing members 21. The members 21 are preferably secured rigidly to the ends of the arms 20 by means of suitable bolts 22 extending through the arms and the flanged ends of the members 21, said bolts having wing nuts 23 threadedupon their ends to clamp the scrubbing members in operative position. The scrubbing members 21 each consist of a bar having bristles secured to one face thereof, said members being arranged at right angles to each other, the end members being longitudinally disposed in advance of the water receptacle, and the intermediate member extending transversely in parallel relation to the wheel axle. The ends of these members are adjustably connected by means of bolts 24 which are movable in the longitudinal slots 25 of said end members, said bolts having nuts threaded upon their upper ends to clamp the bars in their adjusted. positions. Thus the intermediate scrubbing member may be disposed at any desired point in advance of the water reservoir. The connected ends of the scrubbing members 21 may be extended into the corners of the room to thoroughly scrub the same, thus providing a machine which will thoroughly cover the entire floor surface.

After the floor has been thoroughly scrubbed by the brushes, they are removed and a mop holder is arranged upon the wheel axle. This mop holder comprises a longitudinal rod 26 which is the equivalent of the brush shaft 12, said rod being supported beneath thewheel aXle ina similar manner to said shaft. Upon the ends of the rod 26 the clamping members 27 are pivoted, the ends of one of said members being provided with hooks 27, and the ends of the other member having eyes 27 formed thereon to receive the hooks. Thus it will be obvious that when the mop cloth C is positioned between said clamping members, and the members connected, the cloth will be securely fastened in the clamp. Mop members equivalent to the brush members 21 may also be provided if desired for en gagement with the corners of the floor.

From the foregoingit will be seen that I have devised a very simple and novel con struction of scrubbing machine whereby floors may be quickly and thoroughly washed. The volume of water which is supplied to the brush 11 is sufficient to permit a port-ion of the Water to be thrown forwardly of the machine in its movement,

thus wetting the bristles of the adjustable brush members 21. These members may be easily and quickly removed and disconnect ed whereby they may be compactly folded when no longer desired for use. The machine is very strong and durable in its con struction, highly eflicient in practical use and may be constructed at a nominal cost.

While I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the various parts, it will be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification without departing from the essential feature or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:

The combination with a wheel supported axle, arms rigidly attached to the axle, a scrubbing brush removably attached to each of said arms at one end and provided with elongated slots at the other end, a scrubbing brush provided at each end with a bolt adjustably mounted in the slots, and clamping nuts on the bolts whereby the scrubbing brushes are rigidly held together.
