Be it known that I, ERNEST ARTHUR I-IarL- woon, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, whose postal address is 7 Gladstone Terrace, Morley, near Leeds, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Igniting Miners Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for igniting miners safety lamps of the class in which a Self contained friction igniting device is used in the lamp, and has for its object the construction and arrangement of such an apparatus so that same cannot readily be tampered with, and which is so arranged that a lamp placed in the apparatus may only be ignited after the lamp or light admission opening in the lamp or chamber has been completely closed, andv rendered liame proof, thus should an attempt be made to ignite a defective lamp in dangerous surroundings, such attempt will not be attended with danger, as would be the case could the device be operated while the lamp was exposed to the outer air.
In describing my invention in detail, reference is made to the accompanying sheets of drawings, similar letters generally indicating similar parts, in which,

In carrying out my invention, Fig. l shows a lamp L placed eccentrically in a stationary cylindrical inner chamber A, provided at its base with an aperture D for the admission of an operating device C, such device C, being mounted in the lower portion of the revoluble outer chamber B. The
lamp L may be clamped in position bycurely closed on the chamber A, so that the lamp admission opening A1 is completely covered in. The said handle is contained in the form of a shaft C1 provided with a flange C2, and in a recess C3 is mounted a spring C, the upper end of shaft C1 terminates in a screw thread, claw, or the like C5 for engaging the usual friction ignitcr in the lamp base. As will be seen, when the chamber B is in the open position, the screw C5 or the like will abut against the underside of the blank walls of chamber A. As the chamber B is revolved, the device C is brought nearer to the aperture D, and when the admission opening A1 is finally closed, the device C after being pressed upward by its spring, may be screwed into the igniter in the lamp and operated up and down, and thus cause, by friction, a cap or the like to be exploded, or ignited in the lamp, and the lamp wick or cotton ignited. The chamber A may have its lamp admission aperture A1 guarded by a semi-circular door A2, and as the chamber B is revolved around the chamber A, such door will be automatically closed, and may be hinged at either the side or top. This construction may be seen in Fig. 3. In place of the spring C4 a cam path or rack may be arranged below on the movable door or chamber and in connection with the device C, and which latter will at a given moment travel in such a manner as to be pressed upward into aperture D, and engage with and automatically operate the lamp igniting device, the device C6 disengaging the lamp on the re-opening of the chamber. A method of carrying this into effect is shown in Fig. ll, device CU carried by chamber A having a deep pinion P attached about its middle and a roller P1 on a carrier P2 loosely pivoted toward its lower extremity. The latter roller runs in a cam path F3 in such a manner as to remain in the low position until the lamp admission openings have completely closed, about which time the sloping portion P'i of the cam path will operate against the roller P1 causing same together with part CG to rise, and during this rising the latter is caused to rotate owing to the rack P5 carried by the moving portion B engaging-the pinion P; de-
vice C5 would therefore enter and engage with the igniting device in the lamp. The continued movement of the chambers will automatically cause the roller P1 and device C to fall and rise according to the number of serrations in the cam path. The reversal of the direction of operation of the chambers would-cause the rack to finally lower pinion P and the device CG and roller P2, or if the movement is continued in a forward direction I may place a similar short rack in a convenient position so as to cause the pinion, etc., to lower.
Fig. 2 shows a form of device where the lamp L is placed in a revoluble cylindrical chamber A3, the chamber B2 being stationary, the chamber A3 being revolved by handle H working in a semi-circular slot H1 in chamber B2, or in any other convenient manner. The relationship between the ap erture D and device C will be understood from the drawing, the before mentioned semi-circular door A2 is shown in elevation in Fig. 2 and in plan in Fig. 3.
Figs. i and 5 show a form of device where the lamp L is placed in a rectangular chamber At provided with a flat or semi-circular sliding outer chamber or door B5, having an under flange B5 which carries an operating device CT, and in the chamber A4 in the lamp ring L1 or base of the said chamber is formed an aperture D through which the device C7 may pass only when the door B3 is closed. The door B2 may be arranged to operate in guides formed inside the chamber A4, and the opening A1 may be guarded by an additional door, if desired. The lamp L may be clamped in the chamber A, as before described, or may rest in its ring and the upper port-ion of the lamp be retained in a clip F, which, with the gripped lamp, may be pulled upward by handles F1, and operated against the device CT, when the latter is in position in the lamp. The construction of this clip will be understood from the drawings. In some cases, igniting devices of the friction class are operated from the side, in which event the device C7 may be placed in a suitable position, and the moving door or chamber will be provided with an aperture through which the device C7 may pass only when the door is closed.
Fig. 6 shows a form of apparatus in which a lamp L is provided with a friction igniting device, having a plain iron or iron guarded head and which may be operated by means of a magnet, preferably electro. The before mentioned eXtra door guards may be used in this case, though a simple revolving inner and stationary outer chamber is shown, the apertures D, D1, only coinciding when the chamber door is closed. The chambers may, however, be in any of the other suitable herein described forms. In the iigurethe chamber A5 is rotated by a side handle H working in slot H1 in chainber B6. The lamp L may be clamped in its chamber 0r retained in position by a stiftl spring plunger P, of any ordinary construction. The chamber B5 is mounted on a chamber T carrying the electromagnet M and battery M1 or the like, and in the base of chamber A5 is formed one terminal J and in the base of chamber B6 is formed another terminal J1, such terminals being brought together on the closing of the chambers to close a circuit. In place of the terminals a stop on the moving chamber or door may operate and close a push or switch in the position of terminal J1. The magnet rod M2 will have a plain head for magnetically gripping the friction device in the lamp. rlhe other end of the said rod will terminate in a flange M3 and the rod will be embraced by a sliding ring N carried on a shaft N1 pivoted t0 a lever N3 passing through the chamber T, the lever i 3 carrying a sliding guard Y4 for protecting the opening or slot N5, a spring N6 keeping the magnet bobbin in the up position. On the rod or shaft N1 is carried a terminal J2 connected to the electromagnet coil, and on a suitable rest J 3 below same is a guarded terminal J 4 connected to the battery or like h 1, the other terminal of said battery being connected to the push or terminal J1 and thence by contact with terminal J to the magnet coil one end of which is connected to the metallic frame. rl`erminal J is also connected to the metallic frame of the device. The chamber A5 revolved until the apertures D and Dl coincide when the head of magnet rod M2 will spring through and enter a recess in Vthe lamp igniting device and come in contact with the iron head or a spring depressed guard in connection with such igniting device. The lever W5 is then depressed down when terminals J2 and J4 will meet and switch current through the magnet bobbin exciting same, and causing the head M2 to magnetically seize hold of the lamp igniting device. The continued movement of lever N5 will cause the lamp igniter to be completely operated, and the lamp ignited, and this with perfect safety.
In another form, Fig. 7, a lamp may be placed in a square or rectangular chamber provided with a door or moving chamber A6 in the form of a quadrant B1 and the lamp may be carried in such quadrant. The base of such quadrant will bein the form of a guard plate or -flange provided with aperture D, and on the base of chamber B will be carried the device C. As the door is closed, the aperture D and device C will be ception of a spring lock bolt G, contained in the other chamber, such device being arranged to lock the apparatus in either the open or closed position, or both, the bolt being withdrawn when desired by the person in charge, by means of a special key, such as a hollow spindle having a left hand thread, the bolt end Gr being suitably threaded or otherwise, as is convenient. In place of the lamp being clamped in position in its chamber, and held therein by a spring plunger, the lamp base ring L1 may be provided with what is lnown as a bayonet joint, the lamp being provided on its base with one or more projections K which may pass into vertical recesses K1 in the lamp ring L1, and pressed down therein, and such recesses K1 will communicate with horizontal ones K2, the lamp being given a slight turn to place same in position, Figs. S and 9. In a further form of clamping device, the chamber A may be provided with semicircular clips L2 carried by angle levers L3 pivoted in the said chamber walls, such levers project through the sides of chamber A into cam paths L4 in walls of chamber B. As the chamber B is turned, the levers would be pressed in and thus cause the semi-circular clips to grip the lamp, Fig. l0.
It will be obvious that by forming the apparatus of thin sheet metal, same may be permanently attached to the lamp, rays of light being normally cast through what has been herein described as the lamp admission door. The moving portion may be operated vertically instead of horizontally.
What I claim as my invention is l. In apparatus for igniting miners lamps, each having an opening and provided with a frictional igniter, the combination of a casing inclosing the lamp and provided with a doorway for inserting the lamp, said casing having an opening registering with the opening in the lamp, means for closing the doorway, and means registering with the opening in the casing when the doorway is closed for operating the frictional igniter.
2. An apparatus for igniting miners safety lamps provided with frictional igniters, comprising a casing adapted to receive the lamp, a second casing surrounding the rst casing, both of the casings having openings therein through which the lamp may pass and one of said casings being movable in relation to the other, said casings also having openings therein, registering with each other when the lamp chamber is closed, and means passing through said last-inentioned openings when the lamp chamber is closed for operating the frictional igniter.
3. An apparatus for igniting miners lamps provided with frietional igniters, comprising a casing having an opening therein for the introduction of the lamp and an opening registering with the igniter, a surrounding casing also having like openings therein, one of said casings being movable in relation to the other, and the second mentioned openings registering only when the casings are closed, means adapted to be passed through said registering openings for operating the 'frictional igniter, and locking means for the casings.
4. An apparatus for igniting miners7 lamps provided with frictional igniters, comprising a'casing, means therein for holding the lamp, said casing having an opening therein through which the lamp is introduced, a second casing surrounding the lamp casing, one of said casings being movable in relation to the other to close the lamp casing, and means for operatively engaging the frictional igniter only when the lamp casing is closed.
5. An apparatus for igniting miners lamps provided with frictional igniters, comprising a casing having an opening therein through which the lamp is introduced, a second casing surrounding said iirst named casing, means for moving one of said casings in relation to the other for closing said opening, said casings having igniting openings therein, registering with each other when the first named opening is closed, whereby access can be had to the igniter, an electro-magnet M, a magnet rod passing through the same, and adapted to pass through the igniting openings in the casings to engage with the igniter in the lamp, contacts brought into engagement when the first named opening in the lamp casing is closed, a source of electric current connected with one of said contacts, and means for moving the magnet rod and for connecting the source of current with the electromagnet.
