CANDLE-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,624, dated October 21, 1902.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Momrz HAMMERSTEIN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Berlin, Germany, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Candle-Holders, of which the following is'a description.

The present invention relates to hand-.

lamps; and it consists of the details of con- IO struction hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In order to render the present specification easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lamp with the cover thrown back and the small glowlamp projected out through the orifice in the lamp-top. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the whole top cover of the lamp thrown open to exhibit the arrangement of the parts; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the front part of the lamp, taken longitudinally.

The body of the lamp 7c is advantageously of the antique form, and in the forward part of the same, beneath the main or lamp-body cover 7s, a small glow-lamp ais pivotally supported on a pin m, around which a coiled 3o spring on) is fixed, adapted to normally project the lamp a out through an opening in the cover 76, Fig. 1. The lamp-body is provided with a fixed handle d and a movable handle d. The latter is pivotally supported on the cover 70 at c and has its arm I) projecting through a guide-strip h and extending toward the front part 01 of the lamp with its slightlybent finger c. The orifice in the cover of the lamp-body is normally closed by a small cover f, having a spring coiled around its hingc-pin m, which acts to normally throw the small cover open. The coverfis held closed by a flat spring 6, fixed to the interior of the said cover and having one end loose, so that the said flat spring e presses against the edges of the orifice when the cover is closed and retains it closed by friction. The lever b d is provided with a spring-arm g,which normally holds the arm 1) against the opposite side of the guide-strip and keeps the nose 6 out of contact with the loose end of the flat spring e.

The other pole 0 of the lamp is connected up to a contact-piece which is insulated from the body of the lamp by alayer of suitable insulating material 70 The piece 7% carries an open contact Z, and the lamp is provided with a spring projection Z, which when it is turned up contacts with Z and joins the circuit, so that the lamp will glow.

The manipulation of the device is very simple. On pressing the movable handle d toward the fixed handle (1 the nose 6 will be forced against the loose end of the flat spring 6, thus pressing the same back from the edges of the orifice in the cover and releasing the small cover f, which will fly back under the influence of its spring. At the same moment the small lamp a being released from the pressure of the coverf also stands up in the orifice of the cover, and owing to the contacts having been made in the manner previously described the lamp will glow and give light. On releasing the handledthe spring g pushes the nose e back, so that on closing the cover f the spring 6 will hold the same closed by friction.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a lamp the combination of a hollow body having means therein for producing an electric light, a spring-opened cover in the top of the same and means for retaining it closed, an electric glow-lamp mounted beneath the said cover and means for throwing the same up into a vertical position extending out of the cover-orifice when the cover-is opened and means, operated by the handle of the lamp to release the said cover and allow it to open when light is required.

2. In alamp the combination of a body having an electric battery mounted therein, a spring-opened cover in the top of the lamp and means for retaining it closed, an electric glow-lamp pivotally mounted beneath said cover and a spring to project the same out through the cover-opening when the cover is opened, electric connections from the battery in proximity thereto, a nose or finger at the forward end of the said pivotally-mounted 15 handle in proximity to the cover-catch and adapted to release the latter when the two handles are gripped substantially as described.
