Specification oflLettrs Patent.
Patented June 18, 1912.
Application filed October 11, 1911. Serial No. 653,987.
Tocll whom irmagj concern.-
Be it known that I, AsrrroN H. DOYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnson City, in the county of Washington, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coat- Hangers, of which the following is a de scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in coat hangers, the object being to provide a simple and effective device upon which a coat may be stretched and hung, and if desired may be folded and placed within a trunk or dress suit case.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view, partly in section, of an adjustable and folding coat hanger, constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail view of the wooden block supports with the hinges therefor; and Fig. 3 is a detail of the clip for holding the bottom of the coat.
In these drawings, 1, 1, and 2, 2, represent two upper and lower pairs of wooden or other blocks, hinged together by rings 3, through which pass the headed hollow rods 4, the upper one of which has an eye or ring 5, by which the apparatus may be suspended. Adjustable in the hollow rods are two rods 6, hinged together in any suitable way, but herein illustrated as an eye hinge 7, the adjustment being effected by set screws 8. The Wooden blocks support horizontal hollow rods or tubes 9, in which fit rods 10, adjustable by set screws 11. Near the outer ends of the lower rods 10 are secured spring clips 12. Secured at their lower ends to the lower wooden blocks 2 and at their upper respectively bent to surround the lower vertical rod 4, or, as shown, secured respectively to rings 13, 14, rotat-ably mounted on said rods, are inclined steel strips 15, carrying springs 16, adapted to fit within the sleeves of the coat and hold the same distended.
It will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction, and the connections of the various parts, which may, be varied in many ways without departing from the spirit of my invention, which resides primarily in a coat hanger having means for adjusting it to stretch the coat, and means for folding it across the broad way of the coat, and also lengthwise centrally; and also includes means for keeping the sleeves in shape and for holding the bottom of the coat. Furthermore, it is not necessary that both the vertical rods should be adjustable, as the upper rod may be made longer and hinged directly to the lower one, which may be not adjustable.
The use of the device will be apparent.
The coat is placed on the hanger with the shoulders and collar supported by the upper blocks and rods, with the bottom side to the front; adjust the vertical rod (one or both) to the height of the coat, and the horizontal rods to the width; place the lower ends of the coat sleeves over the springs 16 and catch the clips 12 to the outer edge of the coat. If the same has been properly stretched at all points, it may be hung up, or if desired to pack it, it may be folded first broadwise on the hinge 7 and then lengthwise on the hinges 8, or vice versa.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A coat hanger comprising a vertically adjustable support hinged to fold in the direction of its length, and adjustable side supports carried thereby and pivoted to swing around the vertical support as an axis.
2. A coat hanger comprising a vertical support, side supports carried thereby, and sleeve-distending devices carried by said side supports.
8. A coat hanger comprising a vertically adjustable member, upper and lower horizontal members supported thereby, said upper and lower horizontal members being hinged to fold together around the vertical member as an axis.
4. A coat hanger comprising horizontal side supports, avertical support for said side supports, and strips between the lower side supports and vertical support carrying sleeve-distending devices.
5. A coat hanger comprising a vertical member, oppositely extending upper and lower side supports pivoted to swing around the vertical member, clips carried on the lower side supports, and sleeve-distending devices also carried, bysaid side supports and swinging therewith.
adjustable up er and lower side supports pivoted to swing around the vertical member, clips carried on the lower side supports, 10 and sleeve-distending devices also carried by said side supportsand swinging therewith.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
