AUTOMATIC GRAB.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDUARD KRAEMER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Cologne-on-the-Rhine, Prussia, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Grabs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This present invention relates to an arrangement in automatic grabs whose cups do not touch one another in the closed position and which enables the grab to be completely closed in a simple and efiective manner.
Broadly stated the arrangement consists of two yokes suspended from the cups in such manner that, when the grab is closed, the slot left between the cups thereof will be covered by said yokes. On opening the grab, the yokes will be moved laterally by a simple stop or the like.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1.- is a front elevation of the automatic grab in its closed position, Fig. 2. is a similar view showing the grab in its open position and Fig. 3. is a side elevation of same.
In these drawings, 1 represents the cups, 2 the yokes suspended at 3 from said cups so that they have the tendency to occupy gravity. The cups are provided with stop-pins 4, which move the yokes laterally when the grab is opened.
As shown in Fig. 2, the yokes do not at all hinder the operation of the cups as they may be freely moved rearwardly. As soon as the grab is being closed, the yokes follow their movements by gravity and finally form a cover-plate for the lower and lateral slots between the cups, when the grab is completely closed. The yokes are made of such width that the materials to be conveyed take their natural angle of slope in the space between the yokes and the cups. Instead Of causing the yokes to be closed by mere gravity, said yokes may be provided with pressure-springs 5 shown in the left parts of the views of the accompanying drawings.
Having fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an automatic grab of the class clescribed, the combination with the usual cups arranged to leave an open slot between them in their closed position, of yokes suspended from said cups and made of such width that they form a cover-plate for said open slot when the grab is closed, substantially as set forth.
