Letters Patent Nb. 103,004, dated May 10, 18770.
IMPROVEMENT IN' SEATSFOR. HARNESS-SADDLESl The Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all -whom it may concern y.
Be it known thatnI, PETER BURNS, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gig- Trees; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, suiiicie'nt to enable others skilled in the :ut to which my invention.
' Similar letters of reference indicate like parts iu the several figures.
.My invention relates to an Vimprovement in gigtrees 'or 11arucsssaddles, and consists in a novel mode ot' constructing the seat of the tree, as will be hereinafter more fully specified. v
The seats of gig-trees or harness-saddles are either made of' solid metal, or wood, and secured to the crotch by bolts and screws, orare madewith a metallic shell with the inside of wood, iu order that the leather may Both of these forms are, in many respects, objectionable, and the object of luy invention is to overcome these objections.
A may represent a crotch of lordinary construction and form, the crupper B cast in one piece therewith.
C is the seat, secured to the crotch by means of a screw, a, fig. 3, and a bolt and nut, b, the head ofthe bolt extending through both tree or crotch and seat.
The seat G is cast hollow, in order to lessen the weight thereof, and is of the usual curved form.
A bridge, p, is cast over this cavityior hollow, and is provided with a female thread, into which the screw' a lits, and, with the-bolt, holds the seat to the crotch.
Bylcastiug thc scat hollow it will be readily sc en i that there is less weight in the saddle, and also that there is a great saving in material.
The back or highest part of the seat rc is provided with auy'uurnber of suitable holes (l 'd cl, which are made, preferably, daring each way, and are intended to receive blocks of wood or other suitable substance e, which are driven therein, and thus form beds for thev tacks or screws which are used to secure thc leather covering to the seat in the usual manner.
The blocks or plugs of wood are, of course, cut down even with the surface of the seat, so that it 'will present a level surface, and, as the plugs extend througlrthe seat, they thus afford a double tackiug-s'urface, whereas only one tacking-surface was before presented, in those iu which wood and metal were combined.
` 'lhe plugs are driven in the holes, and becomcconr pressed in the middle, but bulge out at both ends, en tirely lliug the Haring ends of the holes, and thus preventing them from working or falling out.
It will be seen that, by this construction, not onlya strong and durable seat is produced, but at the same time one to which leather or other material is readily and easily attached. y
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The seat O of a gig-tree or harness-saddle, provided with thc holes d d, illed with wood or other equivalent substance, substantially as set forth. y
' 2. 'lhe seat G of a gig-tree or harness-saddle, formed with a cavity, h, bridge p, and holes'd d, all cast in one piece, substantially as herein shown and described.
Tothe above specification of my invention I have signed my name this 416th day of April, 1870. PETER BURNS.

M. J. MYERS, CHAs. W. PHELPS.
