WILLIAM B. MILLER, OF SOUTHINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
LIGHT-FIXTURE TRIPOD.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. MILL-En, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Southington, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Light-Fixture Tripods, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce what is known as a tripod for supporting light fixtures from ceilings and walls of simple and inexpensive construction, one
which can be easily manipulated and in.
which there is provided adjusting means so that the fixture can always be set in proper and symmetrical position In the drawingsFigure 1 is a view of the fixture mounted with my improved tripod. Fig. 2 is an inside view of the two parts of the device before they are interlocked. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the male member interlocked with the female member. Fig. 4c-is a sectional view on the line f, 4- of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings a denotes the female member or hanger which as will be seen is of cup shape with a laterally extending flange Z) by means of which it is secured to a supporting surface such as the ceiling around the opening through which the elec trical wires protrude. In its lower side this member has a rectangular opening 0 for the reception of the male member or carrier (Z to which the pipe 6 which supports the fixture is secured. The male member is curved to correspond with the female member and when once passed through the opening 0 can be turned so that it will lie across said opening and be thus supported by the female member. Owing to the shape of these two members, it will be apparent that the male member can be adjusted with respect to the female member in all directions which makes it possible to always bring the fixture into symmetrical position.
It is advisable to provide means for holding the male member and the fixture in ad justed position and a simple device is illustrated in the drawings where it will be seen that the flange is cut away at diametrically opposite points and bent over into the interior of the female member forming ears f f Specification of Letters Patent.

which are engaged by screws 9 g. The male member is sufficiently long so each end will ride under these ears and when it is adjusted in proper position, it can be clamped and securely held by drawing the ears down with the screws. In order to stiffen the male member, I prefer to roll over the edges as indicated at h.
It will be apparent that in the use of this device the female member is first secured in place on the ceiling and the wires drawn down through the opening; the male memher is next passed through the opening and turned to engage it with the female memher, and in doing this it will be noted that this operation is very readily performed. The wires which project from the end of the supporting pipe are now joined to those coming through the ceiling and pushed back into the female member, the fixture is adjusted to position and then clamped by the screws. The usual canopy is conceals the tripod in the usual way.
By this construction there is provided an extremely strong, light and inexpensive adjustable support for the light fixture and one that can be installed with the greatest possible convenience.
It will benoted that the device as illustrated is struck up to shape from sheet metal.
I claim as my invention:
In a device of the character described a cup-shaped hanger having a lateral flange by means of which it is secured to a suitable supporting surface, and an evenly curved inner wall, the hanger having an elongated aperture in its bottom, a carrier adapted to be introduced into said hanger through said aperture and curved to fit the inner wall thereof and when turned at right angles to the aperture adapted to be supported by said hanger, said carrier being adjustable in any direction on the curved inner surface of said hanger, and ears formed integrally with said hanger and adapted to engage the ends of said carrier to hold it in adjusted position.
