Be it known that I, ALBERT A. GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chiropractic Tables, of which the following is a specification.

My device relates to what is known as chiropractic tables, and its purpose is to make a table for office use that shall be adapted to more monveniently administer what is known as the open table adjustment than those at present employed; and

more especially to adapt the table more readily and conveniently to persons of different height and build, and to make the taking of position on, and recovery from the table easier and less embarassing. I attain these purposes by the means shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a lon itudinal section of my device, the. operating mechanism being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 shows a moditied means of operation of the slide at the foot end of the table, and Figs. 8, 4 and 5 are details to show the operating mechanism more clearly.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 is the base .of the table which. is divided into two parts as at 2, joined by a hinge 3. A support 4 is hinged at each end of the table as shown in Fig. 1, so as to drop down, when desired, raising the ends of the table into the position shown. by the dotted lines, so as to be more readily adapted to use with corpulent patients. The main body of the head portion of the table is in the form of a rectangular box, as shown in longitudinal section in Fig.1,and in end elevation in Fig. 3. A shelfb is hinged to the top 6 of the head portion, near its outer extremity, and is supported by a toggle brace 7 hinged at one end by spring hinges 21 to the base 1, and at the other, to the shelf 2, the two parts of the toggle being united by inges, as shownin Fig. 1, while, as I have stated bef0re,'-1 prefer to use the spring hinges 21 in the manner-"indicated. to raise the shelf 5 when the weight isreinoved, any other arrangement of springs maybe em ployed, or the sprin s may be dispensed with, and the shelf raised by hand, without departing from my invention. A supporting brace 8 is hinged to one of the members of the toggle near its inner extremity. This fortable.

brace 8 is adapted to pass through an opening 9 in a partition 10 in the main body of the head portion of the table, and is provided with a notch -11 adapted to engage with the'edge of the opening 9. If desired, additional notches 11 may be provided so as to support the shelf 5 in any-desiredposition, but ordinarily one is sufficient. A cord 12 extending through loops or pulleys 13 and provided with a suitable knob 14-. at its extremity, passes around the brace 8 so as, when desired, to raise it and permit it to pass back through the opening 9, as shown by'the dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus permitting the shelf 5 to drop. If desired, any other suitable means of manipulating the brace 8 may be employed without departing from my invention.

For the purpose of changing the distance between the head and foot portions of the table, and also of'permitting the patient to more readily take his position on the table and rise therefrom, the foot portion of the table is provided with a slide 15- operated by a rack 16, pinion 17,,and crank 18. If desired, a double belt 19 revolving on a drum 20 may be substituted for the rack and pinion, or any other suitable means of giving motion to the slide 15 may be employed. By the use of this slide, the distance between the head and foot portions may be varied to any desired extent, or the space between the shelf 5 and the slide 15 may be entirely closed to make it more convenient for the patient to take his position on the table, the slide then being run back to leave the desired opening, and the shelf 5 permitted to drop by releasing the brace 8. Clips 25 are attached at each side of the head portion of the table in which moves a slide 24 which is provided with teeth 27 adapted to engage with a dog 28 in one of the clips 25, and also at its extremity with a handle 26 adapted to be grasped by the hand of the patient to assist him in maintaining his position, and adjustable by means of the teeth referred to, to liiny desired distance from the head of the ta le.

The method of using the device in practice will be self-evident at once to any one acquainted with the art, and needs no further explanation. Cushions 22 are provided to make the surface of the table more com- These cushions are omitted on the drawings on the head portions, for the sake of clearness. The top -23 of the foot portion is stationary, and the slide'l5 moves under it, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4.

I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a device'of the character described,

. a head portion, provided with a stationary top, said top having a shelf hinged thereto and releasable means for supporting said shelf, and a foot portion, also'supplied with a stationary top, and having a movable slide adapted to form an extension to said top.

2. In a device of the character described, a head portion provided with a stationary top, said top having a shelf hinged thereto, and releasable means for supporting said shelf, said means comprising a toggle having its outer extremities hinged respectively to said shelf and the base of said head portion, and a releasable lock for said toggle, and a foot portion, also supplied with a stationary top, and having a movable slide adapted to form an extension to said top.

.3. In a device of the character described,

a head portion provided with a stationary top, said top having a shelf hinged thereto, and releasable means for supporting said shelf, said means comprising a toggle having its outer extremities hinged respectively to said shelf and the base ofsaid head portion, and a releasable lock for said toggle; a foot portion, also supplied with a stationary top, and having a movable slide adapted to form an extension to said top, and means for operating said slide.

4. In a device of the character described, a head portion provided with a stationary top, said top having'a shelf hinged thereto,

- and releasable means for supporting said shelf, said means comprising a toggle having its outer extremities hinged respectively to said shelf and the base of said head portion, and a bar hinged at one extremity to said toggle, said bar being provided near the other extremity with a notch adapted to engage with a partition in said head member so as .to lock said toggle; a foot portion, also supplied with a stationary top, and having amovable slide adapted to form an extension to said top, and means for operating said slide.

5. In a device of the'character described, a head portion provided with a stationary top, said top having a shelf hinged thereto, and releasable means for supporting said shelf, said means comprising a toggle having its outer extremities hinged respectively to said shelf" and the base of said head por- I tion, and having a bar hinged at one extremity to said toggle, said bar being provided near the other extremity with a notch adapted to engage with a partition in said head member so as to lock said toggle; a

foot portion, also supplied with a stationary top, and having a movable slide adapted to form anextension tosaid top; meansfor operatin said slide, and a base for saic table, said base being divided into two parts connected by hinges.

6. Ina device of the character described, a head portion provided with a stationary top, saidtop having a shelf hinged thereto, and releasable means for supporting said shelf, said means comprising a toggle having its outer extremities hinged respectively to said shelf and the base of said head portion, and having a bar hinged at one extremity to said toggle, said bar being pro vided near the other extremity with a notch adapted to engage with a partition in said head member so as to lock said toggle; a foot portion, also supplied with a stationary top, and having a movable slide adapted to form an extension to said top;.means for operating said slide; a base for said table, said base being divided into twd parts connected by hinges and means at the end. of said table adapted to raise said endfrom the floor.

7. In a device of the character described, a head portion provided with a stationary top, said top having a shelf hinged thereto, and releasable means for supporting said shelf, said means comprising 'a' toggle having its outer extremities hinged respectively to said shelf and the base of said head portion, and having a bar hinged at one extremity to said toggle, said bar being provided near the other extremity with a notch adapted .to engage with a partition in said head member so as to lock said toggle; a foot portion, also supplied with a stationary top, and having a movable slide adapted to form an extension to said .top; means for operating said slide; a base for said table, said base being divided into two parts connected by hinges, and means at the end of said table adapted to raise said end from the floor, and an adjustable slide at the head end of said table provided at its -outer extremity with a handle.

8. In a device of the character described, a head portion provided with a stationary top; a middle portion adapted to be raised and lowered; means for raising and lowering said middle portion, and a foot portion also supplied with a stationary top and having a movable slide adapted to form an extension to said top bridging gap between said middle portion and said foot portion.
