To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, GIUSEPPE MAzzoLINr, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Naples, Italy, gentleman, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Doors, l-Iatches, or Like Closing Devices, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to a device for the opening and Closing of sliding doors, bulkheads, etc., of ships, which are connected in such a way to their sliding mechanism that the door after being brought opposite the opening which is to be closed, can execute a further movement, foir the purpose of tightly pressing the door against its frame. This last movement is produced by wedges in a known manner. K
The invention is distinguished from other devices serving similar purposes, by the facts, that firstly the door during `its entire sliding movement, is carried along by the frame, which is connected to the moving device by means of wedges in the frame which drop into corresponding recesses in the door, and secondly that the wedges and the corresponding inclines on the door are built in such a manner that vthere takes place toward the end of the sliding movement a sharp blowlike pressing of the door into. its opening. To this end the invention provides on the inner side of the door as a continuation of the sharply inclined planes of the wedge recesses, other less sharply inclined planes. Along these slide, with little resistance, the upper edges of the wedges, which, when the door is closed, protrude from their recesses and press thereby the door sharply in the opening. Thus is guaranteed a safer and tighter closing of the door than in known similar devices.
A form of construction according to this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a view in rear elevation, the door being opened, part of the casing being broken away for the sake of clearness; Fig. 2 is a sectionalview `on the line A. The movement of door 2 is brought about i by means of a piston rod 14 actuated in any suitable manner, and which is connected to frame l, by clamps l2 which slide by means of flanges on wedges 9 and l0. Frame l is slidingly supported upon suitable guides by means of a sliding member 23, and is connected to door 2 by a metal spring plate 3 provided with a slot 4 with which engages a button 5 secured to the door, so that the frame may move relatively to the door a distance equal to the lengt-h of the slot 4.
To the frame are attached wedges Gwhich engage correspondingly shaped recesses S formed in the door. The inclined surfaces of the recesses are inclined in the same manner as the corresponding surfaces of the wedges. Directly in line with the recesses S and closely adjacent the inclined surfaces thereof are the wedges 7, the surfaces of which are inclined to a less extent than are the inclined surfaces of the recesses 8 to the wedges 6.
The door slides upon rollers or balls 1G in the groove 22 which slope toward the door opening so as to bring the front edge of the door to the edge of the opening and said grooves are provided with slots 17 into which the balls 16 enter when door is in its closed position.
The device acts as follows: In order to close t-he door the piston rod 14 attached to frame is moved toward the left, as shown in Fig. l, and the frame l moves the door 2 by means of'- the wedges 6 engaging within the recesses 8, until the door is brought opposite the opening at which point the further movement is arrested. In consequence of slot and button connection 4 and 5 the piston 14 with the frame l and wedges 6 will move relatively to door a distance equal to the length of the slot 4, and during the movement of the frame the wedges 6 will slide along the recesses 8 forcing the door toward the opening. When the inclined surfaces of the wedges 6 protrude from the recesses, they-engage the less inclined surfaces of the wedges 7 of the door, slide quickly along them on account of the limited resistance, and firmly press t-he door into the opening and against the door frame. When opening the door the process is reversed and at the first backward movement of the piston rod 14 the door will recede from the door frame as far as the wedges 7 allow, since the door does not take part in the initial movement of the piston rod owing to the slot 4 and only begins to slide in the direction of its length after the wedges 6 have entered the recesses 8.
Instead of employing a piston rod to move the frame, any manually operated means may be used if desired, as for example a rack and pinion as shown in Fig. 3.
I-Iaving now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner t-he same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In apparatus of the class described, in combination, a frame provided with wedges, said frame being directly connected to a driving motor, a sliding door movably connected to said frame, said door being provided with recesses and counterwedges, the wedges 0n said frame being adapted to enter said recesses, the inclined surfaces of the wedges on the frame being adapted to engage the inclined surfaces of the counterwedges upon the door, means for moving said frame to bring the door in registry with the opening, and means to arrest the movement of said door relatively t0 said frame to cause the inclined surfaces of the wedges of the frame to leave the recesses and slide along the inclined surfaces of the counter wedges on the door, whereby the door will be forced to move in a direction substantially at right angles vto its first direction of movement.
2. In apparatus of the class described, in combination,a frame provided with wedges,
a sliding door movably connected to said frame, said door being provided with recesses and with associated counter-wedges,
` the angle of inclina-tion of the inclined surfaces of said counter-wedges being less than that of the inclined surfaces of the recesses, the wedges on the frame being adapted to enter into the recesses, the inclined surfaces of the wedges on the frame being adapted to engage the inclined surfaces of the counter-wedges on the door, means to move the said frame to bring the door in registry with the opening, and means to arrest the movement of the door whereby the movement of the frame relatively to the door Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing Washingtoml). 6.,
will produce a sliding of the inclined surfaces of the wedges along the inclined surfaces of the counter-wedges, thereby causing the door to move in a direction substantially at right angles to its first direction of movement.
3. In apparatus of the class described, in combination, a door frame, a sliding door associated therewith and provided with recesses having inclined surfaces, a frame movably connected to said door and provided with wedges adapted to enter said recesses, the inclined surfaces of the wedges being adapted to engage the inclined surfaces of the recesses, means for moving said frame to move said door into registry with the door frame and means for arresting the movement of the door, whereby movement of said frame relatively to said door, will cause the inclined surfaces of the wedges to slide along the inclined surfaces of the recesses thereby forcing the door to move in a direction substantially at right 'angles to its first direction of movement.

In apparatus of the class described, in combination, av door frame, a sliding door associated therewith and provided with recesses having inclined surfaces, said door being provided with wedges in registry with said recesses and adjacent the inclined surfaces thereof, the inclination of the surfaces of said wedges being less than the nclination of the surfaces of said recesses, a
frame movably connected to said door and provided with wedges adapted to enter said recesses, the inclined surfaces of the wedges being adapted to engage the inclined surfaces of the recesses, means for moving said frame to move said door into registry with the door frame, and means for arresting the movement of the door, whereby movement of said framev relatively to said door will cause the inclined surfaces of the wedges to slide along the inclined surfaces of the recesses and into engagement with t-he wedges on said door, thereby forcing the door to move in a direction substantially at right angles to its first direction of movement.
