THREAD PROTECTOR AND CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 6, 1911.
Patented June 11, 1912. Serial No. 647,818.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MABEL C. TEMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopkinton Springs, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread Protectors and Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in thread protectors and cutters, and an object thereof is to provide a box wherein a spool or ball of thread may be inclosed, which box has an opening in one side thereof through which the thread is adapted to be drawn when used.
Another object thereof is to provide a substantially dust proof box, the thread opening thereof being normally closed by a de pending plate, and also to provide a thread cutter which is normally protected by a shield, the cutter being connected to the depending thread opening protecting plate, and by action of the thread on the plate, the cutter is projected through the front of the shield.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of the inven tion. Fig. 2 is a front elevation with the shield removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section. Fig. 4; is a perspective view of the protecting plate and the cutter.
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, at 1 is indicated a box provided with a removable pin 2 and a thread opening 3, said box being normally closed by a cover 4:. A spool of thread may be placed on the pin 2 or the pin may be removed should it be desired to use a thread ball in the box, and the thread is adapted to be drawn through the opening 3 as it is used for knitting, sewing, or otherwise.
As stated above, an object of the invention is to provide a practically dust proof box, and to obtain this result, a depending protecting plate 5 is provided, said plate being rigidly carried by the pivot member 6 which latter is supported on the box by any suitable-means, as the ears 6. The pro tecting plate is of an elongated form and extends below the thread opening a suitable distance for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
7 A thread cutter 7 is rigidly carried by the pivot member 6 and has an outwardly curved portion 8, said cutter being normally housed in the shield 9. The curved portion 8 of the cutter is adapted to be projected through a slot 10 of the shield when cutting the thread. The protecting plate 5 has its lower or free terminal portion flared or broadened and its lower edge provided with a groove in which the thread operates, the latter being guided by the flared extensions 5.
When withdrawing the thread from the box, a pull is exerted on the lower flared portion of the protecting plate thereby forcing the same outwardly until it strikes the lower edge of the shield, in which position, the cutter is projected sufliciently for the thread to be caught thereover in cutting the same. The length of the shield is such that there is a suitable distance from the lower end thereof tothe cutter, thus leaving the end of the thread projecting a suitable distance below the protecting plate so that it can be conveniently caught again.
The shield 9 is closed at the top and sides while at the bottom it is open to allow proper movement of the protecting plate, as above described.
It will be noted that the thread will be impinged by the protector plate as the same drops by gravity, closing onto the side of the box and thereby keeping the same convenient for use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A box for protecting thread having an opening in the side thereof, a plate movably mounted and normally adapted to close said opening, and a cutter operable by the plate, for the purpose described.
2. A box for protecting thread having an opening in the side thereof, a plate pivoted to the side of the box, and adapted to normally close said opening, a cutter operable by the plate, and a shield normally housing the cutter and having a slot therein through which said cutter is projected to an operative position.
3. A box for protecting thread having an opening in the side thereof, an elongated plate pivoted at one end to the box above said opening and the lower end having flared extensions, said plate being adapted to normally close said opening, a cutter mounted for movement with said plate and having a curved portion, and a shield normally housing said plate and cutter and having a slot therein through which said cutter is projected to an operative position.
4. In combination, a box r'or protecting thread provided with a thread opening therein, a movable plate normally closing said opening, a cutter mounted on the boX, a shield normally housing said cutter, and means connecting the cutter with the plate whereby, on movement of the latter, the cutter will be projected from its shield into an operative position.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MABEL C. TEMPLE.
